Tuning N/A 1.6D

Hello! I'm new to this forum, but I've been having a read and I like what I see!
Basically I have a 1989 1.6d caddy, the engine is completely standard and I love how economical it is (usually about 600 miles a tank) but hate how slow it is! What can I do to make it a bit quicker? I've been reading about gov mod pump, what difference will this make performance wise? Is there much else I can do to get much more power out of it without spending a fortune on balancing, porting and balancing or fitting a turbo etc..... Thanks a million in advance!

One of these and an appropriate dual downpipe will make a huge difference- it has for me.
1989-ish supercharged Corrado 8V dual exhaust manifold. It bolts right up.

Ahhh brilliant thanks! What setup and engine are you running? I don't really want to turbo my 1.6d because eventually I'm going to do a aaz conversion. How much power can you get out of the 1.6d without killing it or billowing clouds of soot? Will changing the standard exhaust make any difference? Also what VAG exhausts will fit?

I have a 12mm head, mechanical lifter 1.6; MKII Jetta VE pump (unmodified) in a Vanagon camper.
Changing the exhaust to duals was the biggest performance upgrade I have experienced. Makes a huge difference for me.
I think there are a lot of aftermarket downpipes that will work with your caddy.

The muffler I am using is not VAG, it is a welded flowmaster style. I don't know if that would fit in your application.

or, you could use the sweetest exhaust manifold ever.. the Garrett VNT! they rock.. but then you would be boosted. and i think you dont want that..

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.
