Convert a gas golf/jetta to diesel
« on: June 14, 2010, 11:16:48 am »
Quick question, how hard would it be to convert a previously gas engined golf or jetta to a diesel? I'm on the look out for a nearly rust free mk2 golf or jetta because my golf has rust issues but a good engine and transmission.

thanks

Swapping to the point of getting it running and driving is very easy. Getting the tach and other such ancillary devices to work is a bit more difficult, but doable.

Your diesel requires two wires to run. One for the stop solenoid, one for the glow plugs. If you have a pull-cable cold start advance all that stuff swaps over. You can make a push  button for the glow plugs or you can splice it into the harness to use the stock or pimped relay system.

The T15 wire from the coil will work fantastically for your stop solenoid, you just might need to lengthen it a little.

Hm, sounds fairly easy. I kind of suspected that. Would I need to change anything to do with the fuel tank and lines or are those able to be re used up to the filter?

just did it to my Rabbit GTI.

It's beyond easy. I also used the positive wire that went to the coil to control the fuel solenoid. I also made my glowplug setup a push button setup. Real easy.

Better do something to the fuel fill hole,..
or you'll go to fill up and the nozzle won't fit. ??? :)

I heated a piece of 3/4" pipe with a propane torch,
to wallow out the plastic,
then grabbed the metal flapper and pulled it out.

the coil control wire will work on a mk1, but not a mk2.  I tried the same thing on my mk2 swap until i found out that cis-e get's its coil feed through the ecu, which was ripped out in my case.  my little crappy swap.... :P

Huh. Must be different for Mk2 CIS-E and B2/BX CIS-E, then. Both the Quantum and the Fox still have a feed for the coil from the ignition.

Did you have CIS-M on that Mk2, with ignition and fueling controlled by the ecu? My experience has been that the ignition loom and the CIS-E loom are separate.

I converted my golf mk2 from gas to diesel.
I had a rabbit diesel engine laying around, and a non running golf.

Swap of the engines, easy stuff, same engine mounts, just have to use the rear engine mount support out of the gas engine, because on the previous body it used the one on the distribution side.

I used the same exhaust, same fuel lines, same tranny, just swapped engine.

On the fuel tank, removed the two fuel pumps, and redo the lines to pickup from the bottom of the tank directly, also cleaned the fuel tank.

Wiring, used a timed relay, known as T-28 on ebay for the glow plugs, set it to run 10 seconds everytime I turn on the ignition, used one ignition switched 12V for the diesel solenoid, and removed the rest of the gasoline wiring.

with that, i just purged the diesel pump manually, and it start right off, and was able to drive.

After a few months, bought a turbo, and make some welds here and there, oil line, and now i have a 1.6 TD Golf, still needing to hook up the tachometer to read the diesels rpms, but I'm really happy of the outcome.
