Cracks in precups, Are we screwed?
« on: May 19, 2010, 05:04:14 pm »
Started to change a head gasket on a buddies AAZ in a mk1 and upon inspecting the head we noticed some cracks in the pre cups, I know the cracks between the valves are tolerable to a extent, how about the precups? heres some close up shots to get an idea of what we are dealing with. Looking for an opinion on what to do

I'm not sure what the official report on cracks in the precups is but personally I would get the injectors checked and carry on. Your cracks don't look too bad from what I can see.

If this is a high performance engine I would definitely replace them. Giles can get the 1.9 precups.

I'd concur, fwiw... unless you're intending to fuel the heck out of the engine I'd say get 'er decked and away you go.

I would tend to agree.  I had cracks like that and I replaced mine.  However if I hadn't planned to run it hard, I'm not so sure I would have changed them.  They look like they are tan, in my opinion Inconel or some type of nickel alloy which are superior to what I got to replace the ones I had.  Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the input, the engine is all stock fuel/boost levels, with that in mind we should be good to go then.

Yes, granted the injectors are in fact NOT actively destroying them. Perhaps have the injectors pop and spray tested. Any truck shop can do it.
I had mine checked for free at a big rig shop. They didn't give me any numbers but they said "yupp popping within range. spray okay"
