Cold Start Problem
« on: April 26, 2010, 11:46:10 pm »
i find when i pull out my cold start lever Rpm doesnt change to terribly much.
it was around 35-38 degrees F and i pulled the lever and yes car started up with in half turn of started so im happy with that but when it idles alittle low and runs rough so i give alittle gas to help it along, once warm though idles PERFECT!

if i turn my fuel screw up a bit it idles to high when warm but good when cold
it there a happy median here?

ps. its a 1.6TD (1990) with a 1.6TD pump off a 1984  so there really isnt to much for adjustment on the pump other then throtle/fuel to my knowlege.

IIRC the pump from a 1984 TD car would not have a provision to increase the RPM when the cold start lever is pulled, only the timing advance is increased.

I just rest my foot on the accelerator to raise the RPM a bit if it's really cold, just about 10 seconds of doing this is usually enough to get it idling nicely.

It doesn't seem like a big deal to me but I do know that FIATs and I think other Italian cars had a knob on the dash you could pull to open the throttle more. I have thought about getting one from one of my FIAT sources and fitting it to my VW. It's just a cable that connects to the accelerator pedal so something like this, or even a lawnmower part could probably be adapted to the car letting you raise the idle without having to sit there with your foot on the pedal. Just don't attempt to use some contraption like this for cruise control.

Thanks thats a perfect answer to my issue. i find myself to having to give a bit a gas to keep her running smooth, it will run without but idles alittle rocky! its about 32F when i start it normaly at night time. not terribly cold but im sure when its really cold alittle more gas will be in order.

i thought my pump was ***ty as my AAZ i pull and it jumps like 150-200 RPM

this one nothing but yes it does run nicer when shes pulled!!

cheers!
