Alt not charging unless I add an extra bulb
« on: April 10, 2010, 10:48:12 pm »
Finally got my project to start but it doesnt seem to charge, the battery light stays on even after reving the enigine and the rev counter doesnt move ???

Thought I'd upgrade the big 3, as I had a really thick cable with battery terminals already fitted off a 3 series E30 BMW that has the battery in the boot.

+ side Battery-Starter-Alternator

- Side goes from the battery to the transmission ground, I'd have connected it it the chassis ground between the battery and the washer tank but I didnt have lugs with a small enough hole so I cut the orriginal battery earth to chassis to transmission ground cable and fitted it between the chassis and transmission.

D+ and W wires are connected at the alt and the loom is connected near the battery and goes back to the fuse box

When I add a spare side repeater bulb between the D+ terminal and the battery terminal the exra current draw gets the alternator working, the dash LED is not drawing enough current as the LED is lighting but the alt is not being triggered, I ran a ceramic resistor on my last GTD, in line on on the wire that went to the alt bulb as it had a mk3 dash conversion and the clocks wernt drawing enough current to trigger the altenator.

With the bulb fitted the revcounter starts working too :) thought it didnt work  :-[
