oil pan gasket??
« on: April 07, 2010, 04:41:57 pm »
My oil pan gasket is leaking in several spots.

Do I buy a new gasket or goop it up with silicone RTV form a gasket and slap it back together...?

Dumb question but I'm tempted to just silicone the thing. Problem would be if I ever needed to take the pan off again for whatever reason. Cleaning the surfaces would be a PIA...

get a new gasket, RTV has no place as a gasket replacement.

if you can get the rubber gasket do that, then it is reusable.

Most people will hate you for thinking such a thing ;) haha.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

isn't a oil pan gasket like 15$?  Buy a new one.  I would upgrade and spend alittle more then the 15 and get a rubber one and say good bye to a leaky pan.

I've seen many engines totally ruined by RTV. It's horribly wonderful stuff.

Maybe a dumb question, but do these come stock in some application, or are they aftermarket?
What is the application or source?
Thanks

Forgive me for asking a totally silly question, but I would guess an AAZ is a 1.9td out of a what? 1996 jetta?
(get the windage tray and the rubber gasket all in one right?)

Makes getting one from the parts store a whole lot easier...

Just got back from uap napa. No listing for a rubber gasket for an '87 diesel. They only had cork and thin paper.

AAZ is G/J 93-98
P 92-96 (I think)

The rubber gasket is built into the windage tray.

Altrom also carries them.  That's where I got mine and uap also buys from altrom.  The altrom part#037 115 220b will also work at napa.  Hope this helps!

I bought my oil pan gasket from bestpriceautoparts.com
or is it .ca?

but likewise a windage tray is never a bad idea!
