cable-less hood release
« on: April 02, 2010, 09:38:17 pm »
wondering if there is a special way to swap the mechanical hood release (the kind that pokes through the grille) in place of one that has the remote mount cable (drivers kick panel mounted) release lever.

looks like it riveted on the radiator support, does it need to be drilled out?

i'll try to post pix tomorrow of what i'm talking about if the above doesn't make sense,

thanks in advance everyone.

Paul

Yes, the rivets need to be drilled out and then you can just use some decent size self tapping metal screws to attach the external release latch. It makes life so much easier.

You shouldn't have much trouble finding one in the 'tex classifieds. They're more expensive than they should be though usually $35-45.

I did that swap last summer. Take the grill out, drill out the rivets and pull the old latch and cable. I bolted my latch in with nice polished-head stainless bolts. It looks great.

that latch is part of the reason I bought my most recent rabbit, that and a set of awesome chrome center caps. non-running 1.6 NA but it's probably nothing too serious, or at least i'll have some spare parts, worth the $150 regardless... it's got great door cards, one complete/working smokers window, and some other rare goodies... or course the body is completely useless but it'll do it's job.
