vac pump base seal?
« on: February 17, 2010, 01:54:26 pm »
is there a gasket or an oring that is supposed to be on the base of the vac pump?

I never noticed if there was, and I think I am leaking oil from where the vac pump goes into the block.

anyone know?

Yes there is an o-ring. Should be the same as a distributor o-ring if you can't find one.

I will rummage around in my complete motor seal kit, might be in there with the rest of the unused/redundant bits.

thanks,

I wouldn't think so but I've never held the diaphragm style one in my hands.

Mine is an 85, and has the newer style pump...

sadly my pump leak is the least of my issues right now...  :P

I think you have to check to make sure that it is still engaging in the oil pump shaft. I think I read that there are different heights.

Maybe I didn't put enough emphasis on "should be" when I said they are the same. I'm not 100% sure, just pretty sure.

That's good to know about the one in the bottom.

im pretty sure i dropped a gasser dizzy in a diesel block before. 99% for sure they are the same. the 2.0s have a bigger hole in the block tho.

Here's the seal Andrew is talking about:

It's usually a hard old black piece that looks like part of the pump. Keeps oil pressure frrom bleeding off.
Not sure where the best place to buy them is, I get them from the dealership.
Don't know the part number right off either.

NAPA has an o-ring that fits, can't remember the size, took a vacuum pump in to test fit.

Are you sure?
 That doesn't add up.
10mm difference between inside diameter and outside,
 but only 3mm thickness?

The base o-ring should be 36mm ID x 46mm OD x 3mm thickness.

tsk tsk tsk......... :D
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.
