DIY dry sump?
« on: December 05, 2009, 10:22:25 pm »
I am doing an aaz 1.6 conversion and I thought it would be a good idea that since the engine is already low to the ground to look into adding a dry sump/reclaimer type oil pan for more performance.  I wanted to see what you guys think and if it is a reasonable concept build one.  Some guys have done this on another forum, and I plan on giving this some serious thought.  link is here to original article:

I will post pics soon "just like everything else"

you know, decarbonated beer is a better coolant than the stuff you buy at the auto store, and is better for you...... really

the hardest part is going to be finding and mounting the dry sump pump.

the oil pan will have to be chopped and modified, but any skilled welder will be able to do that.
all the plumbing should be simple enough, if there is a hydraulic supplier nearby that can make hoses for you then  even better.

as for feeding the oil into the motor from the high pressure pump, I think you could block off the stock oil pump with a plate(where the oil pump used to be) and feed the high pressure oil into the top of the oil filter casting(making sure to tap into the in side of the oil filter casting, so the oil has to flow through the filter)

this would be very cool because if you wanted to use manual brakes(like I do, I hate the vacuum system) you could just take off the vacuum pump and block the hole without having to find one of the elusive early oil pump drive gears.
