Camshaft seal R&R
« on: October 08, 2009, 06:39:49 am »
I wanted to replace the camshaft seal.

I got the T belt off, doing a water pump...
   Doing an IM shaft seal......

   Camshaft seal......
Looks like I have to take off the IP bracket and the Rear
upper cover for the Tbelt to get at this? ..... Can anyone out there give me
some details to this.... procedure...
AND     this means I have to pull the pump and affect the pump
timing to some brutal extreme such that I won't get this pup started easily?

And     Is there supposed to be a Woodruff Key on the IP pulley......??????????

Thanks, Monst

So pull the cam......
and get access to the seal that way.... Ok... that makes sense.

So as for the key...... I didn't see the key when removing the
pulley on  the IP...........
I really don't think I dropped it... in the removal...
Can I get a key for this thing some where...
I almost think It was missing to begin with.....
(maybe that would explain my rough idle) IP timing.

could you give an brand example of a non-RTV sealer...
Locktite makes a couple of products Anaerobic sealants
         flexible  or semi-rigid or rigid......

Thanks on the camshaft removal tip...
That was pretty cool..... I was dreading having to
remove the pump to get the cam seal that way....
So glad that is done now.... I just followed the bentley on
cam removal..
As for the Woodruff key on the IP... I got one at the Autopartstore.
Had to  shaped it to fit , on the grinder....
       So my new question here...
I am installing the intermediate shaft pulley
(Had to put in a new IM seal and water pump)
ANY tricks out there to tighten this with a torque wrench to specs...
I can't get my 1/2 drive wrench in there..NO ROOM.
OR what kind of torque wrench will fit in there... so I can get it to spec.

Monst

I use a 3/8th torque wrench.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.
