injection pump questions
« on: October 07, 2009, 03:11:05 pm »
hey all, last year I bought a cummins 4cyl injection pump.

it is a bosch VE pump that bolts right up to the brackets on the VW motor.
I had to have a pulley bored out to fit the larger shaft.

I mounted it on my last motor(RIP) but couldn't get it ti start, no matter what timing I set it at(not even a single pop) it is definitely pumping fine, as I put a set of injectors on the lines without a head and they spray just fine.

because it is not a VW pump, could the keyway on the shaft be facing a different direction?
or perhaps the keyway on the pulley was put in a different spot when the machine shop bored it out.

I am thinking that the pump might be 90* out of phase(I already tried it at 180* out) but I have no idea how to tell which injector is firing given pulley orientation.

would the pump fire an injector if it was turned over with a wrench?
could I put the pump in the stand, hook the #1 injector and line up to it and turn the pump past each lobe and see which one the injector fires at?(given that the pump is properly primed first?

-Owen

P.S.

I would just try it, but the parts are in my buddies shop, I try to figure out what I need to do before I go over there as I can only work in his shop on weekends.

I guess my real question is, how fast does the pump have to be turning to fire an injector?

Does it rotate clockwise on its original application? ie is it a VER or VEL pump, I made that mistake a while back.

yes it does rotate clockwise, like I said, I have already verified that it pumps and fires the injectors, all I need to figure out now is what pulley position it fires the #1 injector.

yeah, I figured that the lock hole would be useless.

I will try it with the lines off and see what valve spurts.

as for timing, I read that this pump will create lots more pressure than the VW one(injectors for it have a much higher break pressure), I know that the camplate has more total lift, but would it generate the same pressure for a given lift at least approximately?

for instance, would the VW 1mm timing standard have any relevance to this pump?
I was planning on tuning it by ear anyway, but wanted to know if setting the timing to 1mm would help at all in getting it running the first time(rough at least) or if it will be way off.

injection pump questions
« Reply #6 on: October 08, 2009, 10:52:17 am »
Hi,

The fuel injection pump on my Perkins 6.354 started leaking fuel, so Im having a rebuilt pump shipped in.  I thought I could just bolt it in and go, but now Im not sure.  Is there a manual or procedure for installing these and adjusting timing ?  The old pump was a CAV DPA rotary 6-cyl pump.

Please dont send info about pumps on other types of engines; Im pretty sure theyre all different.  For example, this pump doesnt rotate on its mounting to set timing.  Id really like a CAV DPA pump manual, if you know where I could get one.  Or if someone has a 6.354 shop manual that has a page or two on installing the injection pump, Id love to know what it says.

Thanks,

Bill
