Downpipe Question and Issues
« on: October 02, 2009, 03:53:34 pm »
So my $350 custom stainless steel downpipe showed up this week, two months after I ordered it, and the flange doesn't mate up with my turbo.
The gasket looks familiar though, and I was wondering what turbo is it for? My receipt says MK1 1.9L IDI AAZ, K14 turbo, which it the info I gave them, so the screw up isn't there.

It looks like I might be able to drill 2 more holes for the lower bolts to make it to fit, but I don't think I should have to do that. I would send it back, but if it means waiting another two months for the right one I am not going to handle that well. Another strange bit is that there was a shortshift kit for a 020, looks just like the one on my MK1, in the box that I did not order and is not on my receipt, which makes me think my box may have been mis-labeled and this is not my exhaust at all. I have polished the tailpipe already, so I hope that is not the case.

if you were me, what would you do?
I would like to know as much as possible before I call the vendor

The gasket it came with, does not match mine

The new dp next to the oem one. The difference is easy to see

Your new down Pipe looks like it would fit a K03 turbo....

Sounds like a mixup in which case it's their fault and you should be able to just send it back and get the right one, hopefully faster this time. ::)
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

If you purchased that downpipe from Techtonics, the short-shift kit is automatically included with the downpipe.  They say it's needed so the pipe will clear the shift linkage.  It probably wasn't a mix-up.

well that answers the short shift question. I wasn't trying to name names, but still the dp still does not fit the turbo. I'll call them Monday I guess. seems like just the wrong turbo flange. Hopefully they can cut the old one off and weld the new one on.

I'm not sure it's worth the $100 in shipping and time to send it back to them.  I'd either drill a couple of new holes and perhaps cut the excess off the flange, or ask them to send you a square flange and have it welded locally.  Maybe just do like you said earlier and keep the flange like it is and drill 2 new holes.  Then it would be "universal" for a couple different types of turbos in case you ever sell it in the future.
