got a free turbo, now what?
« on: September 15, 2009, 08:25:15 pm »
My buddy is building a sylvia look alike, JDM spec "fanboys, when will they learn" so I got this one or free. It has some shaft play, and leaks oil throught the exhaust wheel "sprayed in some WD-40" so I need to rebuild it where do I get a kit and more importantly, how do I finish taking it apart.  I got the rediculous snap-ring off with the help of some rediculous snap-ring pliars and a friend, and cleaned the hell outta it to properly inspect it.  Wel, next come the pics less the inake/cold side.  What do you guys think I want to use this some day, however, not right now as the 1.5 blocks are notorious for cracking "unless someone is feeling generous and wants to art with a 1.6 block"  this seems very interesting, I mean if all else fails, then this could be rebuilt for fairly cheap then resold for substantially more "just need to make an adapter plate"  he said that this is from a nissan 240sx so I guess that it will put out a bit more boost than the small turbos that everyone is using now.  Just want opinions and advice here not looking to hurt anyones feelings.

Thanks,

Kevin

improving volumetric efficiency...... HMMMMM yeah, but not at the cost of the engine, especially right after an intense build.  So, anyways, there are two bolts that do not want to budge on the hot side housing, so much so that they are simply rounding off, and breaking my wrenches in the process.  I cannot completely dissasemble the thing until these come off GRRRRR...... >:(

Heat is your friend... I use propane and it will free just about anything. I have oxy acetylene but have only had to use it for cutting. Since you are going to rebuild, you don't have to worry about cooking the seals. Get it good and hot with your MAP and the vise-grips you already sized for what's left of the bolt will crack it loose.

Also, you wife must really be understanding to let her kitchen become a part washing station ;-)  My Ukrainian wife would not allow this - Her kitchen is almost operating room clean. She'd let me do just about anything else anywhere else in the house, but not near food.  :-)

Tell me about it, I cleaned up but she wasn't present for this part of the operation.  My wife is Japanese, more importantly Okinawan, and the Kitchen is her sanctuary.

Maybe clairvoyance...  75 years ago the military developed a special drug from the Yage plant to induce clairvoyance.  It was one of the more significant reasons we won WW2.  He might have gotten his hands on some, although it's highly clasified and kept under a tight watch.  Very hard to come by.  More likely, he probably has InvertaCAMX.  It is a pretty much top secret software that can turn any computer monitor into a video input device.  It's been around for a decade or so.  Big Brother is watching you...

LOL !!!  And I thought it was our Navajo eating magic mushrooms and going all clairvoyance :-D Just goes to show you :-)

I know what me means on the kitchen & a wife of a very clean culture. My wife is constantly wacking my 13 year old for wearing his "street shoes" in the house ;-)  Not physically that is.

I had to torch all of the bolts on the turbine side of the Volvo turbo I took apart.  Some of them wouldn't even come out until the housing was glowing red around the bolt.  My machinist had a great quote:  "You don't need special tools when you have a torch!"

I soaked the Merc turbo with PB blaster every day for about a week, those bolts all came out pretty easily.  I guess PB really does work, just takes some time.

My thoughts exactly.  Wonder if it's a T25??  The T3 I have is HUGE compared to that, and it's a pretty small turbo.

I'm 6'2 and lets just say that everything is porpotionate ::)  And I am probably sure that this turbo is small, I don't need it to be big just a little something to give it a little boost with high durability and no/low lag looks like this little baby is the ticket.  *daydreams about the Burger King commercial tht features the gentleman with tiny hands* or maybe Just Maybe I have tiny hands and it is a HUGE turbo.  How do i find the turbo designation? and more importantly how do I get my grubby hands on a rebuild kit for it.  "I love this part" ;D
