Oil filter adapter plate for 80 diesel Dasher
« on: June 26, 2009, 09:46:40 pm »
Hello all you helpfuls,

Recently I picked up a ratty old but running 80 Dasher Wagon with the 90 cubic inch diesel. When I got it the vacuum pump for the brakes was not working. But the car came with a lot of extra parts, including two other pumps, so i swapped one out. It worked great for about two weeks, then that one went out as well. That leaves the last one, but there's a small hitch: not all these pumps are made the same.

In the Haynes manual that came with the car, there's a picture of a vacuum pump showing a coiled oil line between the pump and the top of the oil filter adapter plate. But this car has no such oil line. The adapter plate has no opening for that oil line. And the first two pumps had no inlet for that oil line. The last pump does have the fitting, and amongst the extra parts I even found one of those coiled lines. But that still leaves no way to connect it to the filter plate.
Does Myke_W or anyone have an extra filter plate with the oil line opening?

These vacuum pumps each have two larger hose connections, one for the vacuum going to the brake booster, the other seems to be a return oil line (?) going back to the block near the filter adapter. In the case of the first two pumps without the smaller coiled oil feed line, how does the pump receive oil so as to send it back through the larger return line?  And why does the pump need oil circulation anyway?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ron

I'm not familiar with the dasher but you may want to see if the mk2 vacuum pump will work for you. They pretty much never fail

The oil line you mentioned is found on the earliest cars, so that pump is no doubt the oldest of the lot. The big vacuum pumps work by the action of a big diaphragm in that's pushed and pulled by a lever, driven by a gear on the intermediate shaft. They drain oil back through their mounting shaft, and the later ones receive oil directly from the pump (which is driven by the same gear on the intermediate shaft)

The "oil return line" you speak of is actually the vent tube, where the gases pulled out of the vacuum system to create the vacuum are dumped. The vent tube connects the output of the vacuum pump to the crankcase breather system.

You can buy a rebuild kit for the big diaphragm pumps for fairly cheap, try AutohausAZ.com. You will need both part# 068198821A and # 068198819, total comes out to ~$23 for what will work like a brand new pump. Instructions are simple enough, but to really work on the car you'll need to hunt up a Bentley manual for the car. I have a shop copy and a clean reference copy, they're not hard to find.

the oldest oil pumps like his, are either shorter, or longer if i remember, than a standard oil pump. im pretty sure they are longer than the newer pumps. but they do have the hole drilled to lube the pump from the inside. but its not used to lube the vac pump, its used to lube the oil pump drive gear. and some of the really really old vac and oil pumps had splined shafts instead of just a big flat keyed shaft.
