I believe the 1.6TD pump is superior in many ways to the 1.9 pump. It's got way more adjustability and none of the quasi emissions control junk the AAZ pump has. If you really want more fuel and have a giant turbo to make use of it, you can always swap a 1.9 camplate in the 1.6 pump.

my TD takes a few turns to start when cold and cuts out if i don't give it a blast of the load peddle (my cold start isn't connected) and its pritty smokey as it first fires up... is this not just normal for an old diesel?

Ah really? Maybe normal then? Or you have the same problem as me!

I'm comparing it to my old 1.6d, which used to start first time absolutely perfect with no white smoke.

actually thinking about it my old scirocco gtd used to be the same as well.

i've just been reading a thread on here about blow-by, by the sounds of it white smoke on first start up is normal?

its normal for a diesel thats slightly out of time with most likely a bad glow plug and low compression, and no cold start cable

I've had it timed up with a gauge now, it was retarded a little. It does seem more powerful now, and runs a bit quieter which is all good! However, if anything, it's actually got harder to start. It now takes a few chugs to start, i have to use the timing advance lever or it stalls straight away, and there is still a large amount of white smoke on startup. If its been running and it's still warm, it will start easily as it should.

Should i be looking at glow plugs / injectors?

Yep - you've a plug (or two) duff.

A TD should fire up first stab, slight puff of smoke and NO timing advance lever ever (in the UK) - I'm so confident of this I'm not fitting mine.

The people who said it is normal to struggle to start and smoke need to fix their motors!

Oh remember to do the blue wire mod for when it's warm....

Thanks Reg. As I never needed it on the old 1.6d, I thought it was odd to have to use the timing advance lever to start.

So, new plugs it is! The blue wire mod - is this for the coolant temperature sensor on the glow plug relay? I just disconnect this and the plugs will glow for the same length of time every time?

Any recommendations on where to get some new plugs? GSF?

Get the bosch duratherms for your GPs and if it is warm out I don't know if I would want the glowplugs on full cycle everytime. Maybe save that mod if replacement doesn't work. When I had mine on a toggle switch it would actually start harder with the glowplugs on when the engine was warm.

Right i've changed the glow plugs to Beru (i couldnt find bosch duraterms). It had NGK plugs in it beforehand.

It now starts great, no chug chug chugging!  ;D

toggle switch??? (where is the banghead emoticon?)

The glowplugs don't cycle a full cycle - you cut it short by turning the key.

Mind you it sounds like this was merely a duff plug or two (did you test them or note any colour difference?) and not the hot start issue that plagues tired VW diesels.
