Transmission Removal Questions

Hi volks,
I pulled an engine and trans out of an 87 and want to put the AGS trans into the 90 jetta.
I have removed the two large top bolts, 19mm I think. Also one bolt for the starter.
However, there are two more bolts holding the starter on and they have a start like pattern.
Can anyone tell me the size? Thanks,
Matt

there 8mm allen. i just use a torx bit that fits good in them. plus it has just enough wobble room that the tool clears the starter. dont forget the big long bolt on the back of the enigne that goes through the engine block into the tranny.

8mm allen = 5/16" allen I had one of these with tripple square bolts in the starter... Of course it also had one of those mini starters of a late model gasser too..

it had a gas starter? how did it start? i had a gas starter in my well worn 1.6 TD engine and it would barely start that. i know there is no way i could get a gas starter to get my 1.5 fired. the gas starters are .7 hp. the diesel ones are 2.1 hp.

This was one of the little gear reduction high torque buggers like found on the MK3 gassers I think.. It actually started it fine other than it cranked a bit slow when hot.. I don;t know how long the PO had it on the car, but it didn;t last too long for me...

haha. i didnt figure it would. when i had the gasser starter in there, it would start fine warm, but cold starting, you might as well be pissing up a rope.

I would have expected the same results.. Oddly enough it started fine when cold.. Even down around freezing.. When hot though it cranked hella slow.. Coulda been cables too though.. I replaced them when I put the proper starter on..
I gotta say though, when the gear reduction exploded in that gasser starter it made a nifty noise..
