Old t3, no wastegate actuator
« on: May 25, 2009, 06:43:57 pm »
I haven't been very satisfied with this 1.6 TD that I built this past winter.  For starters the turbo I am using is a rebuilt t3 like the one on the 83 Jetta TD with a stage 1 conversion on the compressor side.  I can't tell you how much bigger the wheel is but mjm turbos said they had to machine the case for it to fit but it is visably bigger looking at it.  I haven't seen any boost over 5 lbs from this thing yet and I really feel it is either way too big for my use or poor tolerances inside or both.  I am thinking about trying the original turbo as I still have it, the original stock t3.  The reason I didn't use it then was the wastegate actuator was all rusted away so I got a rebuilt one from MJM turbos, anyone know any pros or cons about them?  Other than the canister being gone and the diaphram shot it doesn't have much play in it, no more than this rebuilt one.  I have taken the actuator off in peices and have considered lapping the valve and just running it with no actuator meaning no wastegate to compare things.  From what I read these things release around 10 lbs and since I haven't seen 6 yet on the new one I'm not too worried.  How important is the wastegate anyhow and I do still have the BOV [which doesn't leak].  I hear people here getting 15-18 psi so I shouldn't be too worried on this stock t3 should I about causing damage from over-boost?  What should this thing be seeing as far as boost with the stock turbo, 83 Jetta T/D engine all new and rebored with everything stock.  If I don't have any more boost after the switch I'm gonna just make it all N/A as the thing doesn't make any more power than the other N/A and gets 10 less mpg but it is very clean exhaust wise and uses very little oil.  But as far as making any more power it doesn't do a thing that I can see or feel other than a bigger hit to the wallet when filling it up  It does have a little turbo wine though but that doesn't do much for me without any power.  Does anyone have any other ideas or thoughts about this, I would appreciate your input :-\
