Can you help me find the Hockey Puck
« on: May 24, 2009, 09:10:55 am »
I need one of the hockey puck things on the valve cover of a turbo that isn't on the N/A. I checked the vendors section, ebay, and asked around a little. I don't know what they are called that is part of the problem, but I think the function is to separate oil from oil vapors and let them enter into the intake. I have seen them in many pics in here and need to have one. Please let me know what it is and where I can get one. Thanks Lucas ><>

You're right, it's a baffle that coalesces the oil vapour so it pours back down into the head. You may want to post this in the "for sale" section.

I have a stock one for a 1.6 and a 1.9. I also have a billet aluminum one (sorry, but that one's going on my engine).

The name you seek is:

"PCV Valve"
(ala, Positive crankcase ventilation)

Having a bit of a hard time finding one right away online to fit 85 golf,
I bought a new one from the dealer for $100 once,
but heres one for a mk3:
http://www.parts4vws.com/catalog/product_detail.asp?PartNumber=037129101R
This one has one bottom hole (to valve cover) and two upper outlets.
Cap the lower one and use the upper one and you are good to go!

You can go to an auto parts store, but it will be a cheap chinese piece of crap,
a good import specific parts store should be able to get one.

I should have known. All it is is a PCV? Could I use one from one like my 79 Ford Bronco? If that is all it is I don't see why not, unless it is as I figured and it was something special dreamed up from VW engineers. I wish I had a stock one to compare the vapor comming out. If someone wants to test I would appreciate it. Even if it has a little different results I don't think it could be that destructive could it? I am already using a different valve cover so unless it is some special engineered part I may give it a try as I am not spending 65-100 dollars on a PCV if I don't absolutely have to.

Nothing special at all,
standard PCV, and any will do.
(aside from logistical concerns with mounting)

You can dump into a catch can...

I did it for a week, cause I was concerned with the gook
going right into my turbo.
I quickly became more concerned with the gook & smoke
floating out from under my hood at every stop light.
Looked like the car was on fire,
stained everything in the vicinity,
and I was not a fan.
Back into the intake with the gook.
Sorry, turbo.

its not a PCV... theres nothing inside to limit the amount of air going through it like a PCV has. it has some separators and stuff in there. its supposed to trap oil vapor and drain it back into the engine. kinda an important part. the one on my engine is off of a gasser, valve cover and all.

Well then would a PCV work? I have always heard that you are supposed to vent it to the intake so that the oil mist lubes the valve guides/stuff. I am just looking for something to hook it up so I have something to do that. I have a little while yet to go for it, but I am trying to be prepared. I never had anything like it on the N/As I owned and didn't know if it was something special for the turbo models. I could build something out of a fitting and some screen if that is all it would take, or hollow out the PCV and put something in it to help keep most the oil down. Should turn this into a poll of what to do.

Thanks for the puck...now I am curious. Do these things come apart? What do they look like on the inside. I am interested in seeing one now and knowing how they work. Anyone have a pic of this thing apart?

well then,
I always defer to Andrew,
and am now wondering what detriment I caused to my '88 golf
running it for those years with a PCV from Discount jammed in the top of my valve cover!
