Golf 2 GTD - Looking for info
« on: May 23, 2009, 04:35:16 pm »
Hi guys. Ross is my name. Ive just bought a Mk2 Golf GTD off ebay. I got it for a song, and although the body has high mileage, the engine only has 190000 kms on it. Firstly, I was hoping for a bit of info on the engine itself. I understand its a 1.6 Intercooled turbodiesel engine putting out 85bhp standard. Am I right? Also what model engine is it? Is it a 1Y or a JX or what? I'd just like to know what I'm working with.

Next, I'm hoping to maybe just up the power and improve the engine in some subtle ways without going overboard. What should I do here? Improve the air flow onto the intercooler? Put in a K&N air filter kit? Change the aneroid pin? What else should I do? I am not keen to up the turbo pressure. Its not a new engine and I dont want to bunch my turbo.

Any suggestions, reccomendations or anything I should know about this car and its engine would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and I'll get some pics up if anyones interested. Its a maroon 3 door with all the trimmings.

Thanks!

Ross

Well, I got myself a bargain!!

OK, so it has the worst paint job I have ever seen. I mean a paint-pissing monkey could have done a better job, but I think with a bit of wet and dry and a lot of polishing and buffing, I think I might be able to get it looking half decent. There are a couple of dents on the back, but nothing serious and there are a few little issues that need to be addressed at some stage, such as, the rear wheel bearings, bits of trim missing, a problem with the radio draining the battery all the time, the electric mirrors not working and a bit of adjustment needed in the gear lever to let me get into 5th gear easier, but for €500, its to be expected, and it drives lovely, and is bloody fast! When the turbo winds up, it really takes off. So Im delighted! Im back on the road again, and in a Volkswagen!

I hate the fact that you can pick that up as a cheap car...
I am so jealous.
I am from America where the europeans give us crappy copies of cool cars!

Salut Ross,
Parisien ?

The GTD engine code will either be RA or SB and it's a 80cv (there is a slight difference between cv and bhp but I don't remember the calculation).
Eitherwise follow the guide memtioned above

Interesting...
So where in Europe are you?  Weird colour... I've never seen a 3 door GTD before.
Is this a made up car?
Reason I ask is that the routing of the fuel lines is not right. Nor the cloth!
Hell, just as long as it goes fast I suppose ;D
Does it have the correct watercooled turbo?

Don't look like a GTD engine to me - no aux water pump.

Is there a BOV on the inlet manifold.

but then the IC is there... and it looks right.

The way to tell is the engine code....

As for tuning. more boost and more fuel.

A new filter wouldn't hurt you may see a v small increase with a new filter K&N or original but dont put a cone on

I'm an Irishman living in Paris. Ive been here for the past 6 months. This is the first car Ive bought here. Actually Im having beaurocratic problems with the car. It turns out it was classified as an insurance write-off by the previous owners insurance company after a small crash. The damage was repaired but now they're telling me I need to get a passage au marbre done; a roadworthiness test where they take apart the car and measure the tolerances, and it costs at least €1500. If anyone can offer any ideas as to how to get around this problem, I'm open to suggestion.

Oh, as for the car, the model on the Carte Grise (reg cert) is 19RA22. I found out that this is indeed a 3 door GTD GL, hence the electric windows, central locking and electric mirrors and the extra interior trim.

I'll get the engine number when Im doing that damn squealing alternator belt. Im curious myself. Its on the right front of the engine block, right?

No idea how to get around the French MOT thingy, maybe slip the tester a few notes?  ;) ;)

I would say import to the UK and back, but that probs won't help when importing it back...  :(

Other than making sure the car is 100% sorted and handing over the cash.... maybe engine swap the GTD to a 1l or 1.3l  Ryder? It would be an epic swap with all the other goodies though ;D

tbh, I'd take it back to the previous owner and tell them to (make them by pain or death) pay for the passage au marbre as they did not declare this when selling the vehicle, if they don't pay up threaten them with a small claims law suit. It may be a pain in the arse, but you may not have to pay for it  ;)

There were three GTD's on Ebay this week. A black one, a white, and a Montana green ;D
The block code should be on a machined strip under the water outlet area on the head [on the block]
