Giles -I need more torque
« on: March 28, 2009, 08:57:45 am »
So i'm pretty sure i'm gonna bit the proverbial bullet and get a pump built from Giles. It's for my 1.9 na and don't tell me to turbo it, i can't be bothered, and i don't have the time. I have already had a pump built with a 10mm head and all the timing advance goodies done. Question is will one of his super pumps give me more low down torque. I don't really care as much about horsepower as it's going into my 1990 transporter and it needs more low down oommmpphh. If seen some graphs but i need more info before jumping in.

I guess you're asking a question that only Giles can answer, so ask him. I, personally, have never seen a non-turbo 1.9 here in Canada. We got the AAZ in the Mk 3 and I have a Giles pump on a T3 turboed AAZ in my Mk 1 Caddy. The torque is fantastic.

I am not going to turbo.it Don't have the time or energy to start doing big modifications on yet another vehicle. I have my 2160 cc dual weber 1971 beetle for that. I'm a big believer in KISS [keep it simple stupid]

I trust what Giles is saying,I'm just  trying to get a little more real world opinions. I am wondering how much of a difference going from a 10mm head to an 11mm will do, besides top end fueling.

I'm sure there are a few people that have NA's with Giles pumps. Chime in guys!
I also found that going with a lightened flywheel gave me more low end torque, due to less rotating mass.

I think if you put a letter in with the pump telling him what your main areas of improvement you would like to have and also what you don't want and in what and how it will be driven then he will better know how to set it up for you because what works for one vehicle might not work for another especialy for low end torque.

Give him a call and see if he can't set it up to how you want it.

or the price of the Giles pump, you can get a new turbo that will bolt on to your 1.9 w/o custom work and this will solve your need for torque. I'm sure his pump will get you most of the way there, but you'll be bellowing black smoke to get there. Diesel will be back to $4 / gallon soon enough so it will pay for itself in fuel savings.

If Giles builds your pump, you won't be billowing black smoke (unless you ask for it). Turbos are a PITA.
I know with my pump, the bottom end power increase is amazing.

Giles can get 150 HP out of a 9mm plunger, so I don't think you'll need ot be upgrading to an 11

Alright i'm in. I may wait a bit because i also run on WVO and i think it would be better to break the pump in a bit, especially because in July i will going to New Brunswick and back [2400 km's] and there is no way i ain't doing all on diesel. Last year it cost me $2.00 for the trip.
