i say AAZ

all the time/effort you would put into a 1.6 is better served to a AAZ.

AAZ w/ extensive head work, with a gt28rs ball bearing turbo will give you a nice broad power band, and with a giles pump i think 4900-5000 should be attainable

just my .02

I looked at them all, and went AAZ. The bottom end grunt is truly spectacular for daily driving and , with a 2-stage boost controller, I get top end when needed. 10 psi daily and 25 psi when needed.  :D  :D  :D  :D

well, ive got an ancient N/A 1.5 thats got 22 psi going to it with a fiber gasket. it has quite a bit of power. over 100 hp for sure, cause it smokes hondas and toyotas too good to be very weak. and i wind that thing to the bolts, and nothing has ever let go. except a block, but we wont go there, it took 37psi to do that.

Having driven the 1.9 and the 1.6 in tuned form now, I can confirm the 1.9 is a lifeless dull slog of an engine.

1.6 it is.

having driven a AAZ sans turbo (dont ask how) it was a dull dead dog on cocaine..

build a 1.6 wiz what ze germans call a gross turbolader mit VNT a 10mm peugoet pump head SD274 nozzles @155 bar and a free exhaust, couple that to a GTI gearbox and you are in business

1.9 head flows better than the 1.6 head.  It has larger intake/exhaust ports.  They're a different shape than the 1.6 ports though (D-shaped) so you should use 1.9 manifolds (intake especially)...

I believe the 1.9 hydro head is a direct swap for the 1.6 hydro head, so anything you'd do to use a hydro head on a mech block applies.

What kind of work on the aaz?  Head porting if done correctly will give you the ability to have great gains.  The done correctly is the important part.  We dont have too many people on this side of the pond that are knowledgable on serious vw diesel head porting. How about over there?

Can you expound on "correctly done", please? My AAZ head is just off & I'd like to have some port work done to it... I haven't looked for a machine shop yet, but there's a VW shop I trust in Long Island & I'm going to ask them for a recommendation.

1.6 Block. 1.9 AAZ Head. Hands down Solid Set up with Great Power.

What about this in an N/a setup?

1.6 Block. 1.9 AAZ Head. Hands down Solid Set up with Great Power.

So if i were to add say a K03 while adding the AAZ head and a Giles pump.. then it would be worth it? (Thats what i plan on doing in the future)

I wouldn't want it.  The 1.9 head will make starting hard with it's lower compression.  Without taking advantage of boost, it wouldn't be worth it.

ok, so from what i have picked up, it is not important to mirror finish the ports. and also you dont really want to re shape the ports at all. basically you just want to clean up the casting flaws out of the port. smooth it down a bit. maybe open it up a little, but stay away from reshaping unless you are SUPER CONFIDENT with a dremel. all ive ever used was a dremel with a flexy shaft and one of those small sanding drums. i actually could feel the difference in my tired 1.6 when i cleaned up the ports.
