help me plan
« on: March 08, 2009, 05:53:47 pm »
so im looking into engine options for my current project. i want to stay diesel. i want to either go 1.9aaz or tdi alh. ive been researching and kinda understand the mtdi option. basically i want to get as much power out of a diesel without going methanol or water injection. 200+ hp would be nice.

If you have a bigger budget, go with the mtdi. Parts are a bit more expensive (injectors, pump, cylinder head, etc.) but you can get a few more hp out of it.

If you want performance on a budget, go IDI. You can still get almost 200hp and that's with a surprising amount of junkyard sourced parts.

so isnt a mtdi just a tdi but with a larger idi pump basically? like could i take a alh and run a "race" idi pump and regular non vnt turbo? also other than electronics are the tdi's stronger and flow that much better than a aaz?

You could put a tweaked IDI pump on an ALH but it will run at something like 30% capacity of a stock ALH. You need a probably set-up mtdi pump, which you can build yourself if you are quite confident with intricate mechanics. You'll need an IDI AND a TDI pump (we can see the costs increasing here).

The TDI isn't necessarily stronger. In fact the AAZ rods/block are very similar to the early TDI's. TDI's have the advantage of better efficiency due to finer atomization of the fuel. So the potential is higher and you can have better fuel economy with the power.

Methanol makes up more power than you think plus it's letting you run more boost safely.  Some mods like cams and heads can get you as little as 10hp to the wheels.

1)standard map, no methanol
2)standard map, with methanol
3)basic remap, no methanol
4)basic remap, with methanol

you mainly need the needle lift sensor from the no.3 injector, and the crank position sensor.  AFAIK all other sensors can have a resistor in them and the engine will run fine.  thats probably the cheapest way to do it if you can get your hands on the wiring harness.  the early 1Z won't have the immobilizer, but i think the AHU might?
