Has anyone ever dropped the triple square wrench down the oil drain in the head?I have!!!I thought i was dreaming. My simple retorque turned into a nightmare, quik! It went all the way down in to the case ,but stopped on something standing straight up.I was able to get it with a magnet pen and a piece of wire.It was 8 inches down in the depths.

That is like the first time I took off the IP and put it back on. There were some little washers on the studs of the IP and one fell right into the bottom cover for the timing belt. Luckily I saw it because it didn't make a sound.

Where i used to work the german steroid boy was re-ringing a 2.0 gasser. After the head was back on he dropped one of the cam bearing cap nuts down the rear oil return. Him and the assistant service manager spent a while trying to fish it out with a magnet, which was too big. One of them then borrowed my good thin one to no avail. Lift up the car, remove the oil pan again. Find the nut, re-install everything, start car. While it was warming up i asked where my magnet was. They stared looking....and looking.... Nowhere to be found. I made them remove the pan again[ ] and there it was wrapped behind the last block and crank.

I was just finishing a cylinder head replacement after a broken timing belt when I dropped a small fastener. I could not find it for the life of me and I was pretty well finished and everything was closed up so I just found a spare. I started the car and this fastener came shooting out from the transmission like a bat out of hell (I have an automatic and the torque converter housing has large openings). It ricocheted around the small garage I was in and took out a flourescent light.

I learned an important lesson: another reason automatics suck.

I once dropped a nut down the 1.6td intake by accident. Thankfully that thing (and the head) is allum so a magnet worked but i sure did panic. Glad i had my friend to calm me down.

Just Tuesday night I was swapping an injector and decided to pull the glow plug while I was at it.  Got the &*()^)#(&^ little 8mm nut off the end of the GP and then "PLINK" it's gone.

First thought was "Awww crap, where did that go, I don't have another one..."

Then I look down at the nice big injector hole right below where I dropped it.

Damn.

I have a nice magnet in my tool box that works great for getting out heat shields, but it was a BIT too big to fit through the injector seat itself.  Popped a long bolt on the end of it though and stuck that in the hole.  Fortunately the magnet was strong enough that it "conducted" through the bolt and grabbed the errant nut from inside my precup.

After that I grabbed one of the rubber caps I had from the end of a new injector and stuck it in the injector hole.  I'm NEVER leaving an injector hole open again!

I guess whenever you do something like that the most important thing is to STAY CALM and THINK before you act...

if you run into this problem again (and your permanent magnet doesn't do the trick, or you can't find one), just get the right size steel bolt, and wrap some thin gauge wire tightly around the base of it (about half way or so depending on the size and depth you need to go) and hook both ends of the wire up to a 9v battery (polarity doesn't matter) and there you go.  even if you unplug the battery it will still hold a bit of magnetism for a while, but much stronger hooked up to the batt   .  in a pinch you might be able to hook it up to the car batt, but i think even a few seconds might fry the thin gauge wire unless you have a really long strand

My biggest scare was dropping a bolt down the vac pump hole.  Luckily, it ended up in the oil pan.
