AAZ Questions...its different i swear
« on: January 27, 2009, 01:32:52 pm »
So I tracked down a 1.9td, Guy says he swaped it in from a 95, its got under 190km he wants 1300 for tranny and motor, I offerd him 500 for just the motor, he said timing belt/GP's/waterpump/injectors has been changed. I then asked him how the MPG is, he said GREAAAAT 700-800km a tank...and I'm thinking.. thats low...800km=497miles and his tank is 14.5gal, which is 34mpg....I called him out on it, he said "14.5 gal sounds right…. Yeah…34mpg sounds too low… you’re probably right.  The fuel economy is up there though"

My question is, is the mpg really that low for 1.9td? all stock or is there something wrong with it...

from what i've read the 1.9 td stock.. aren't good at all, compared to the 1.6 for milege in stock form.

But hey.. is 35 mpg really that bad? its better than pretty much 80% of people on the road are getting :P PLUS its got a turbo.. owner probably drives it with his foot to the floor to here it scream the turbo lol

itll improve with some tuning :) i think..? lol

well I mean, mines pretty quick, faster then tdi's thats forsure, and i get anywhere from 40-45 with my foot through the floor...I'm not going to dish out money for a motor that gets worse mpg, although I was going to put all my stuff from the 1.6 on it, Ive heard there monsters...but 34mpg...damn might as well drive a gasser....alot less *** to worry about lol

is this winter driving? City?  I get over 40 regularly with mine.  However the cold weather hampers that and I'm currently seeing roughly 750 km per tank.  Keep in mind I don't regularly drive my car until it sputters and dies (and I'm sure most of you do the same :) ) so you're bound to be using a few litres less than the entire capacity of the tank.
Its not hard to get 46mpg on the hiway in the summer though.

he said summer o6, he said he went to ssmarie from here, which is 430miles, and he said another 30 miles into the states before he needed fuel, so 460miles total. I checkd and it was 34mpg excaulty what he said 700-800km a tank...which is horrible, I just figured the motor is tired

it could be that the engine is so restricted that its not that effcient.

i mean gtd 1.6td 70hp
1.9td 75hp.....

just a thought, but if you were allow the proper injection and turbo set-up SHOULD come with a 1.9, it would give better milage......

if you want mileage that is similar or better than a 1.6TD, then you need to get a TDI box.

it's all in the driving style.  the 1.9 is a torque monster!  after putting that into my mk2, i can drive in 5th gear, and still accelerate uphill without the turbo being fully spooled.  of course i have an mTDI...  if you drive it like you stole it, you'll drink more fuel.

most 1.9 boxes are like 1.6 boxes... the gearing isn't right.

I think thats what I'm going to end up doing, a tdi-m...always wanted one...got any hints or help in what to look for with the 1.9? other then lookin if the crank was replaced

whoa    math must be a bit off  :P  that's like 2300km per tank

getting back to your story lildevil,
my 1.9 has a T3, 1.6 pin and uped fuel screw, gets hammered on every day through windy up and down mountain roads and I regularly get 40 mpg or 5.90 km per liter.  also you are a bit off on tank size, its a 13.5 US gallon tank ( 50 liters )

if I am only hwy driving and keep it under 120 km/h I can get as much as 45 mpg but that's no fun

and jtanguay is right about the gearing beeing wrong on these trany's... at 120 km/h the tach is at 3000 RPM

I can get 600 miles from a tank, nudging 60 mpg on a run and over 50mpg in daily use.

It's a standard 120K non-eco AAZ in a mk3 estate.  :D

well the early 1Z/AHU (i have the 1Z) already has the crank fix, but mine wasn't a tight fit with the crank gear.  extra material had to be welded and filed, but luckily it wasn't too bad.

i have a K24 on it right now, and it makes good power.  to give you an idea, it will accelerate in 5th gear @ 50km/h up a decent sized hill.  now thats with a 1.6TD box though... (my clutch isn't holding all the power at the moment... i might need a stronger pressure plate)

i got mine from someone who imported motors from Europe.  it was in very good shape.  even with just over 100,000km the clearances were still within spec, much in part due to the high quality oils they use.  so i had it re-ringed with total seal, and new bottom end bearings with a crank polish.

i highly suggest a TDI box though... the car would accelerate happily with nice tall gears.  even if you decide to go with a 1.9TD.
