foul smelling foul smell.
« on: January 18, 2009, 04:59:23 am »
ok i originally thought i blew the hg a month ago,but it miraculously disapeared. Now ive done some driving at 15psi with a cheap fiber gasket.Im getting pressurized coolant only when it warms up and a foul smelling smoke coming from the head/block.I never overheated, just maybe some 20psi spikes.it seems the who;e gasket would have to fail for this to happen.
Cummins 4bta- 85 dodge prospector short bed
28 mpg!!and i can pull down a house!

Just out of curiousity do you have head studs on this motor?  I'm new to this and I've read not to let the exhaust not to get over 1350-1400 for very long but what will a new head, surfaced deck, fiber gasket and ARP studs handle as far as boost, I probably won't see over 10-13 psi I'm guessing. Anbody have any thoughts :?:

With a metal AAZ HG and studs i'd say you could reach 30 psi with the studs torqued to 100ft/lbs. but that's just a rough guess? :P YMMV!

Edit: Sorry to hear that Dilly  :( I'm always using a metal HG from now until forever. The fibre ones just don't like ANY power increase mods what so ever. I'll keep a spare vibre one in my trunk just because i have it and no one woudl buy it - just for emergencies (since getting studs it's not a prob. right?)
I really like having studs. With just a couple tools you can change a HG on the spot if needed. a crecent wrench, 13mm 6pnt socket, torque wrench. a towel for the back seat. a cloth/exactoknife to clean the surfaces, something to put the two fluids in and the HG. oh and a 10mm socket for the cam/timingbelt cover. and a quick grip clamp to hold the IP in place while you take the belt off.
That's not too many tools to keep in a job box in the trunk is it? :P
Edit: and a screw driver for the hose clamps
