Just wondering if the alt. from an AAZ has a W terminal. Also would an Alt. from a MK3 TDI or gas have a W termnial if used with a MK2 dash cluster w/ tach. Or are they controlled by the ECU.

Probably depends on the supplier (ie they might just stock one alternator for all applications) but likely not... gasser's don't need it and the TDI reads RPM from the engine crank sensor.

BTW, the AAZ alternator uses the serpentine pulley and it's a different diameter than the MK1/2 alternator, so if you were to use an AAZ alternator and pulley to drive a MK2 cluster some recalibration would likely be required. :wink:

How do I calibrate it. Is there a dash pot in there somewhere. Or is there some soldering to be done.

you can hook a W term onto most alts - a wire to one of the windings will do the trick.

the revcounter has a cal pot on the board.

All,

I just installed a Mk II diesel tach I purchased from Dr. Diesel in the cluster on my 1988 Vanagon that now has a AAZ 1.9 TD engine. This was connected via the standard cluster wiring to the W terminal on the Alt. It fits in the Vanagon cluster like stock and works like a charm. However, it reads around 1600 rpm when the engine is running around 1000 rpm.

In this regard can anyone tell me what direction, clockwise or counterclockwise, I need to adjust the cal pot on the circuit board to bring the reading closer to the actual one? As a I am also running an industrial tach, kind of like a Tiny Tach, off the W terminal I do have an accurate reading available to use to calibrate the diesel tach in the cluster.

On a mk1/2 alt it's a male spade teminal usually pretty close to the center of the alternator. It's on the non drive (pulley) end. There should be a W stamped pretty close to it

On the AAZ alternator:

- the big B+ cable bolts on to a stud
- the W-terminal and D+ lines plug in (using the standard MK3 VW two-pin connector) at the bottom of the alternator... "bottom" being defined when the alternator is bolted to the block.
