Author Topic: Oil cooler seal (Read 2072 times)

Has anyone out there ever used a gasket from the 1600 oil filter to seal the top of the oil cooler which is the watercooled sandwitch type. It uses a rubber O-ring and the gasket fits in there pretty good but it's a little taller and leaves about a .060 gap between the housing and the cooler. I don't know anyone who carries an o-ring 1/4 by 2 3/4OD by 2 1/2 ID or if I can get by with this. My o-ring is pretty flat and don't trust it but I don't want to blow the gasket out either from maby being too big. Has anybody ever tried it :?: This a T/D

I don't really understand what you mean by the mileage may vary. Do you mean the gasket might not last long or something like that. Did yours work and last or did it start leaking after a while:?:

Thanks for the reply, I caught it after I posted my last reply. I guess I'll just right it off as a brain fart or something. I'm glad it worked, I was just thinking about when somebody accidently has the old oil filter gasket come off the old filter and stick to the engine and then they put on the new filter with it's gasket and a day or so later it blows out, happens all the time, I've been lucky though but I always look when I change oil after seeing one do it.

Those o-rings are available from the dealer and are about $2.00.

Well if that's all they are then I'll get one or two the next time I get in town. I always try to stay from the dealerships, I didn't think you could get anything for $2 other than a can of pop from one of them. Thank's Again

and it has two little rubber tabs that stick out and hold it in place as you tighten things down... probably worth the trouble sourcing if you can.
