In the past few days my mk1 1.6D n/a seems to have contracted the flu again. The idle went WAAAY too high. don't have atach so I'm not sure how high but high enough that it idles in 4th at 45km/h
Dunno why. there was locktite on the adjutment screw, (pump was rebuilt 2 months ago) no oil consumption, runs fine, start first flip on the harshest day. It's fine when its cold, but after about 20 mins of warming up it goes high. I've just adjusted it but there are only about 3 turns left on the screw. What the heck could cause that? Again, it runs fine and burns no oil cause at first I was suspecting run-away on oil but it hasn't lost a milimeter in 5000kms. The only thing I did on it 2 weeks ago was changed the fuel filter cause there was some water in it and froze solid
Any ideas? BTW I run Shell diesel with Stanadyne additive.
thanx

thats funny mine does the same thing, i start it up and pull the cold start it idles at like 1100 then i push it in and it idles like 900 (fuel is turned up alittle this is why it idles at 900 not like 800-850) anyways i drive down the street 5-10 mins of driving ill be at a light then all the sudden i hear the idle kick up on me!!! like it will just jump from like 900 to like 1100!
if i pull the cold start idle it hits like 1400 its like the whole system jumped.
i cant figure it out. pump rebuilt 8 months ago, motor rebuilt 8 months ago
turbo seems fine i burn like no oil at all maybe 1/4-1/2 liter if i drive the *** outta it over my 5000 oil change inter.
also i have adjusted the idle down to accomidate like 1 month ago ran fine for a couple days, then it came back again even with the fuel turned down, if i go any lower when cold and no cold start it will idle 750 so it shakes like crazy!!! AHH just wish i knew what was going on!

sorry for double post
when it idles high sometime not all the time but sometimes the idle will hang as well will come down on its own sometimes or ill have to break and let out clutch a bit to force engine down.
even when it comes down it doenst return to normal runs still high i think it comes down if i drive it hard like really revver her out,
(maybe just a fluc though)
doesnt work all the time

All the 1500 and 1600's I've had always did vibrate like hell, the dash acts like it is trying to get out of the car  till they get a littlel heat in the cylinders after driving and then push the cold start back in. The colder it is the worse it is but that's normal on these older ones which is all I've ever worked on and everyone else I know that ever had one of these things does too. I'm not sure how messing with fuel screw will affect it but if you try to adjust an idle speed with a cold engine it's definately gonna idle faster when warm and also do you have the cold start system adjustd right? I think it is a combination of both the fuel screw and idle speed adjusted on a cold engine, just my thoughts.

Well I backed off the idle screw for now, but like I said I only have maybe 2mm left on it.... I'm just surprised that it came out of the blue... I got 6000kms on the rebuilt pump so far. I know my smoke screw should come out a bit cause at low RPM it puffs balck very nice
