11mm ARP stud torque values?
« on: December 10, 2008, 03:44:14 pm »
What is the final torque for ARP 11mm 200,000 psi studs using their molly lube or 30 weight oil?

The directions are contradictory:  they say 63 ft.lbs with the the molly lube on the box, but then there is a paper insert that says 80 ft.lbs (?)

I'm not talking about 12mm, raceware, etc...just these studs.

What is correct???

using their moly lube decreases the friction, therefore actual torque applied is greater (less torque is wasted to overcome friction) so using the 30wt oil you would need 80ft/lbs, and with moly you would need 63ft/lbs.

but you better check to make sure.  do you have their moly lube?

Yeah, I have their lube...

The point is that the box said use 63 ft.lbs with their lube OR 80 ft.lbs with 30W oil.  Ok, so I'lll buy that.

But inside the box was a piece of paper saying to use 80 ft.lbs with their lube OR 85 ft.lbs with 30W oil.

Which one makes the most sense to you guys out there???
Now, I know the 12mm studs have a different spec and I'm just scared to death of breaking one of these studs.

It's 80 ft-lb with ARP moly lube, and 85 with 30-wt motor oil. I just traded emails with ARP to confirm this last week.

Although these are technically gasser studs those are the specs I've always used...   20K miles on one and about 55K miles on mine and still holding...

Now if the rest of the dang car woudl hold together that well...

Heh heh, you're right... the specs I gave above aren't the official specs for diesels, 'cause there are no official specs!

That's the best we're gonna get out of ARP for now though. Good to hear yours are working fine.

This discussion has come up many times..  At one point we deemd that the final torque with the 12mm stretch bolts come out to a tad over 100 ft/lbs..   The studs are a finer thread so the clamping force should be greater in relation to the torque applied...  Just a guess but I'm betting the clamping forces will be close the same...

Does anyone know what the raceware spec is???   Are the a fine thread like the arp's???

Makes me wonder if VW didn;t specify such a low torque on the 11mm bolts because they know the block wasn;t going to take much more...

with the 11mm you dont get the same bite.. so it can break easier...

raceware is 50 ft/lbs. they use a special coating to achieve low friction losses. only using normal 30wt oil too...
