Alternator question
« on: December 04, 2008, 09:27:13 am »
Anyone know what charging output the alternator puts out on a 1.6 TD?
Mine is putting out alittle over 13v and I just want to make sure thats normal, I heard that on American cars its 14.5v

As you see in that former thread, you need more than 13V - a 6 cell lead acid battery needs to see at least 13.6v at the terminal to fully change. Each cell develops 2.2v.  I didn't want to spen a lot of money for a reman alternator, so I made brackets for a Chevy.

so what you're saying is...if I'm seeing a little over 13v then it's not enough to charge the battery then...

Usual voltage with charged battery and fast idling engine is 14.3v to 14.4v . Try the battery voltage after the engine has stopped 20 minutes. 12 and a half volts or more is good. 10.5 volts you have a shorted cell and an alternator killing itself trying to shove enough juice into that battery trying to get it to that magic 14.4 volts.

If its Bosch, the brushes are sold with the voltage regulator attatched, £15 and two little screws and two minutes of time. Easy.  If it's Valeo? Not so easy.

Got an oscilloscope? See what ripple you get out of it. You can see if a phase has died.
