Anyone put neon rad fans in their IDI?
they are very slim and are dual fans. I noticed them when i was fixing my girlfriend's neon's starter problem. You have to remove them to do it.

they are verryyy thin and are dual fan shroud. Any ideas? i'm thinking of going to the junk yard to nab them out of a 1999 that's in there.

I know neons have a rep. for over heating but i thought it was poor engine design and too much load on the rad with the AC and trans cooler and everything.

I would just look for a 91 passat dual fan...they are supposed to be a direct bolt in 8)
I got a 93 passat fan in mine...but mine is not the direct bolt in....I had to make 2 small tabs to mount the fan in the stock locations..

Anyone have good pictures of the Passat twin fans?
Are they really slim and do they come with a deep shroud or is it really a 'space saver' design?

thats them in my garage floor just dwarfing the radiator.
They only JUST fit. I have a template drawn up for the supports and shroud.

I powered one of them in the middle of my living room and the blinds (they were closed) went EVERYWHERE....

Probably LOTS of draw... they are powerful fans.
The taurus had an oil cooler and AC i think?
AC for sure anyways...

might wanna beef up your wiring Ed!!!!!!


One of the issues that needs to be addressed when installing a Taurus fan is the wiring. The fans draw near 80 amps at start up :shock:  then simmers down to a mere 30 amps of continuous draw. These awesome fans pull around 3000 cfm, more than enough to cool even the meanest engine.


just make sure you have some BIG wires for running that fan... :wink:
reason I know this is cause my rockbuggy uses a taurus fan too...

Nobody...?

I will grab some pics of mine tomorrow....mine is NOT the direct bolt in replacement...I had to make 2 small extender tabs to make mine mount in factory locations...

The wiring on the fans was significantly larger than the stock one...

Thanks for bringing that up. I'll keep that in mind with what all i have to replace.

The taurus fans are pretty thin TurboJ but you do need to make a shroud.
I'm looking forward to never over heating ever again.

(do you use two fans on your application or only 1?)

pretty sure the Stock VW  fan relay will not last wired to a Taurus fan.

Those fans in your pics are different then my Taurus fan I have on my rockbuggy...

I bought mine from a JY for $20....

if you are using a tauras fan you need to make sure you use a relay that is rated for spikes of 85amps.....napa sells cheap relays that would work.

I'd like to use two, but I don't want massive, heavy fans so if there isn't a suitable OEM application, I'll probably go with a single, universal, slim fan.
The Taurus / Neon ones aren't an option for me since there are very few Neons around here and absolutely no Tauruses..

...Still waiting for that pic of Passat fans :)

You dont know how lucky you are.

SOMEDAY Ill take a picture of the ones I have. I have a 16v Passat fan (bolts right up) and a 95 VR6 Passat fan (much larger...same kind of design..wont fit without mods)
