Well, I have a 1.6TD ( mf ) I have been taking apart for a rebuild. I am going to be getting the injection pump redone ( only by the best ) .

Do you think this motor will have enough juice to push a 91 passat wagon? It doesnt need to be a speed racer, just something that will keep up and do highway speeds.

Can you guys share some advice for me, anything.

Also, since the passat is a cable shift tranny. Can I switch gears out of my diesel tranny into the cable shift.

2. What would you like to know?
3. Why not just use the Passat gearbox with its cable shift? The Passat gearbox is a lot stronger than the Golf/Jetta etc. 020 gear boxes.

Advice, well anything. What should I be doing to this motor to make it reliable but somewhat quick. Does an intercooler really help that much?

And tranny, well isnt the stock passat gearing too high for the diesel motor?

On a diesel, high gearing is exactly what you need. I would worry though, that the Passat has a too low gearing. The diesel engines work in lower rpm range, remember.

Intercooler is of utmost importance in tuning a turbodiesel, especially a VW one. Actually, you should use one even if you have a stock engine.
It will improve power, endurance and mileage.

As for the engine in general; just make sure it's in good order to begin with, then add intercooler, maybe a bigger downpipe and then start playing with the injection pump and boost. Anything you'd like to know, I believe somebody will always help you on this forum :wink:

So should I not use a passat tranny? I have the means to disassemble the transmission if the gears will swap over. I want to keep the cable shift tranny but I want my diesel gears in it.

020 gears into a 02A? I don't think that would work.
But what's wrong with the Passat gearbox?

a buddy of mine Tom! (burn your money) Tyler has seen Tom's passat with a N/A diesel motor and can comment on this! but he used a 020 trans and used a MK2 shift linkage to shift the gears in it! so he could keep the diesel gearing! works well for him !

I have a tranny from an 86 jetta ( that is what my motor came from ) and will have to find a passat tranny. So my question is... can I find a stock passat tranny remove the gears and re-gear it with my 86 gears.

I am still having doubts that this motor will be enough to push the heavy passat wagon.

The motor will have increased boost ( what is a safe yet effective number? ) larger exhaust and a pump rebuild by Giles. What do you think?

I have a Passat wagon and it came with the 1.9 TD AAZ motor that is tuned to make 70bhp stock. I drove it like that for a fair while, and it really wasn't bad. Ok so it wasn't a fast car and mine was geared fairly low, but the torque made it fairly driveable. Didn't need to downshift for hills although accelerating up them in top gear wasn't what you'd call expeditious. You shoudl be able to make more than that fairly easily with your stock 1.6, and if you get to work on it you'll end up with a fairly nippy motor

Yes I've seen and driven in this car a couple times.

Tom has a strange hook up. He is using the cables, but a rod shift (020) box. Somehow that puts R135 on the bottom, and 24 on the top of the shfiter pattern. Being a 1.6 NA it is slow. Very slow. That doesn't stop him from towning around 8 VW engines in it though....LOL

Great everyone! thanks for the help. I dropped the head off for rebuild today at the best place I know of in town.

Now for the tranny issue. What would a stock b3 passat tranny be like on a 1.6td motor?

Bad at best. It'll be a 16v tranny which is typically short ratio. If you look in Canada you could get a B3 diesel tranny. Hydro clutch, and cable shift
