81 caddy 1.6D no fuel from IP no elec. power
« on: November 07, 2008, 05:24:18 pm »
Just got this truck, guy said it hasn't run in a year then rough running. It has no elec. power except to the starter, engine turns over fast but no fuel out of the IP. I feed the IP from a 16oz bootle fuel going in none out. Run a jumper to the fuel solenoid(it clicked) still no fuel. Baffled about no electric power. Help Please

Is the timing belt intact?
For power, is the battery good?  Is there a small cable hooked to the + post along with the large cable to the starter?  Might be that small cable is defective.

Is this the silver truck that was on Richmond craigslist? I saw one for sale on there. Sounds like the IP is junk. Remove the out bolt on top of the pump, fill it up with fuel and crank it with a jumper wire on the pump solenoid. If fuel gushes out put the bolt back in and try to start it. You may want to test all the glow plugs first, or at least hotwire the bus to make sure it's powered.

Yes this is the Richmond Craigslist caddy. Good battery, it has 2 small wires coming from the + post on the battery. Plan on checking the IP today. Never run across a vw with "no" power to the accesories-lights.

you might want to give all the battery ground connections a good cleaning, that can cause trouble too. take a pair of jumper cables and connect them between the engine block and the battery ground and see if that helps things.

Got it started, body ground wire missing. But engine sounded like it was trying to beat the head off then stopped. Need to pull the valve cover and head maybe.

before you do that why don't you make sure the valve and pump timing are correct, check valve the clearance and do a compression test. if it'll run ok afterwards just thrash it.
