The merits of proper tools
« on: November 02, 2008, 08:18:29 am »
I tried setting the injection timing a while ago, but I didn't have the screw-in adapter so I used a magnetic clamp stand like you'd use in a metal workshop.  It sort of worked, so I thought.  The car ran fine except it's been a bit buzzy and noisy at speed, and with the cold start handle out it sounded quite rattly.  I thought that was just how it was with the handle out..

Well, I just checked it now, and it was almost 1.0mm, and I thought I'd set it to a conservative 0.92mm!  I put it back to 0.94mm based on people's views on here, and the fact I'm running veg - albeit thinned.

The car's way smoother all through the rev range, and nicer to drive in general.  For some reason I can now feel the governer coming in at about 3.5-4rpm - time for another mod I think.

The thing is, I'm after smoothness in driving and economy rather than power (yes, I know I'm an interloper on this forum) so would it benefit from more retarding perhaps?  It's still not totally smooth at speed.

retarding will make it less efficient, advancing timing will help MPG, to a point.

I suspect my injectors though - if they are weak that'll have an advancing effect, right?  Must get them rebuilt.

I think so, but a worn pump will have a retarding effect so it could be a wash.
