question about my turbo
« on: October 19, 2008, 01:27:55 pm »
i'm just starting a td conversion into my petrol scirocco, most of the engine bay wiring is either plug and play or very easy to sort out, but there are 2 electrical plugs that go to the turbo system and i have no idea what they are for, heres some photos...

first up is this white plug on top of the turbo

then there is this plug on the top of the cylinder type thing thats joined to the turbo by a small hose

could any body shed any light what these are for? also is there any way i could bypass these? or are they important?

thanks in advace.

Mine certainly does not have those....
Uhhhh
Maybe the one on the oil line is a temp sender for the oil light?
the other one ... i ... don't ... know

If you could ID the turbo it would help. but perhaps someone on here will already know because of the plugs or pictures..

you must have a GTD motor with a water cooled turbo! i'm assuming that a temp sensor for the electric pump motor that circulates water after the motor is shut down! but i'm not for sure? i'm sure somebody across the pond will chime in with what you want to know! we did not get those motors over here in north America!
thanks Duane

I've never seen either of those pieces but I'll guess the one in the second picture is a water pump, and the one in the first is a temp sender. Most likely needed, but I really don't know

this don't sound too promising lol

thanks for your replies so far though. if its a water cooled turbo would wiring the water pump (if thats what it is) up to a live thats only on when the ignition is on do it any harm? or is this some thing that would need to be activated at certain times, like when it hits a certain temp or some thing?

educated guesses would help, i am out of my comfort zone here lol

Hi

its a temp sensor on the turbo which is wired to the aux electric water pump when the turbo is too hot.

I was going to do a petrol to GTD swap with my mk2 golf and came across this. I ended up just getting a complete GTD loom. Trying to figuer it all out though sent me crazy so I traced all the wires.
They do go back to the fuse box but i'm pretty sure its just a complete circuit.
So yeah get a live, and fuse it then just wire it all up.

btw, if you need any spare bits for it, i've got a Turbo Technics rebuilt K14 water cooled turbo which is the same as yours. Also I have a working aux water pump. I've also removed the glow plug system from the GTD loom so its a simple swap. if your interested.
I have to get rid of all my stuff as my engine turned out to be toast:cry:

oh yea that set up will make your turbo last a long time if it's working properly! i have a K26 watercooled turbo in my gasser caddy that works they same way! in aftermarket i believe they were called turbo savers!

i checked mine and its already wired:D, i bridged the two terminals inside the cap that fits on the turbo sender with my ignition off and sure enough the extra water pump buzzed away :D  so if you like ill try and work out the wireing tomorrow and let you know what i find out.

heres a pic i took of the plate on my turbo, its on the left handside if your turbo if looking in the engine bay.

thanks for the help so far 8)

would i be right in thinking that the temp sensor acts like a switch? (i'm not very good with electrics so please forgive me if i'm wrong), if so would it just be a case of making a simple circuit like this...

MouseGTD, that is exactly right except the battery posts don't have a connection between them (that would be a direct short).  Other than that you have drawn a proper electrical circuit for the temp switch to turn on and supply electrical power to the aux water pump when the temp is too high.

The other thing which may be important is how you connect the coolant pump... if there's a brown wire on the original pump harness (dunno if you still have it?) it's ground.  Connecting it in reverse will reverse the flow of coolant... which may or may not be a problem.

Just a warning... There is likely a relay driven by the sensor to power the pump..... If you wire the pump right to the sensor you might cause it to fail.... I don't know this for sure but it's worth looking into.
