1.6 diesel altenator needed in Calgary today
« on: October 13, 2008, 10:04:43 am »
My son is trying to make it to Calgary on his way back from Toronto from to Calgary.

Anyone know where he could get an altenator in Calgary?  Anyone have a used one for sale or borrow and we will send it back on the greyhound once he gets to Vancouver?

Thanks

If he cant find an alt tell him to buy a new battery and don't use lights, radio heater ect.

These cars can go for a damn long time with no alternator.

unless he needs the alternator to drive the water pump (ie frozen alternator) just go without it. Sleep at rest stops at night. I drove around for a week without a alternator before the battery got so week it wouldn't start.

I have been regularly driving my Jetta for a few months without an alternator. The battery holds enough charge to go for about an hour or two with the headlights and radio on. It can go quite a bit longer if the headlights are not used.

Same experiance - If he can find a place with hills to park at the top and sleep, he can roll start it w/ just G.P. and he'll get an enormous amount of time. I used the jump starts and no power for anything but IP for weeks in college. When he jumps it, he can have the jumper car wait a few minutes to charge the battery and he's have a day's worth of power for the IP fuel cut-off.

Ditto. I drove without a battery (sort of similar) for many months. I parked on a hill and it started fine even without glow plugs so long as i had a big enough hill and didn't try starting it at 30km/hr in 1st gear. 3rd works wonders at about 40-50km/h
