i have a petrol 1987 scirocco (i've been told these run mk1 golf wiring/fuse boxes), and a 1990 golf gtd. i'm planning to put the diesel engine in the scirocco, but will the engine bay wiring loom from the golf plug and play into the scirocco's fuse box? if not is there a way around this?

The gasser Sirocco chassis is an A1 and the diesel Golf is an A2... very different chassis and very different wiring, particularly at the fuse block
My suggestion would be to ignore the factory harness anyway, since diesel wiring is so simple:
- oil pressure sensors will wire up as per the original
- the wire that used to go to the Sirocco's ignition coil now goes to the fuel stop solenoid on the injection pump
- wires to the alternator should splice together fine
- starter wires should be the same... perhaps the small ignition wire is different but it can be spliced.
Pretty much all that will be left is the glow plugs... easiest approach here is a small starter solenoid and a pushbutton on the dash... here's one approach to the stuff under the hood:

My moneys on a pressure or temperature sender or switch for the water. Probably not nessicary to wire in, but is extra insurance to notify you of failure. You would have to find out if the switch is normally open or normally closed. Then wire it in a loop with the oil pressure light. if its a sender, you can wire it in to the stock a2 water temp sensor.
