AWIC effect on EGT? Performance?
« on: September 24, 2008, 01:31:31 pm »
I'm stuffing an AWIC into my Samurai and was just wondering what kind of effect this will have on EGT? I am not really looking for more power (but more is always welcome), but I am looking for maximum longevity/cool running. I know it depends on alot of variable's, just wondering what people have seen with these intercoolers, and if it's worthwhile.
I plan on using a large trans cooler in front of Rad and a MBZ coolant pump.

an AWIC can be much more efficient than the typical intercooler, but you must cool the liquid effectively.  a big rad to cool it will definitely help, as well as a high flow pump.  a fan is also needed to cool the rad for the setup, and should be thermostatically controlled.  i'd also recommend using something like redline water wetter to increase the transfer of heat.

EGT's will definitely be lower as the intake temps will be lowered.

on my AWIC setup, after my autocross runs I can put my hand on the tube from the IC to the intake and leave it there.  I can't do so on the tube going from the compresor to the IC.  Real scientific I know.

I use a bosch pump from a ford lightning and about a 2 gallon drag race fuel cell modified to take a 3/4" fitting for the 3/4" hose.  Cooler is an auxiliary oil cooler for a 350 chevy (I think) mounted in front of the radiator in front of the radiator fan.   I use enough antifreeze to keep it liquid in the winter and also the red line water wetter.

Yea, I guess bigger the better on the rad. I already have 2 10" puller fans on the engine rad, I'll mount the IC rad in front. An AWIC will work particularly well in this Samurai application since it's an offroader, I do not get much high speed wind through there.

So the tank is a reservoir? makes sense, but I was hoping I could just use a large rad and circulate it fast enough, I do not have much room to work with.
Does an IC help keep your engine coolant/exhaust temps down, or just offer increased performance due to denser air?

it keeps overall engine temps down IMO.  and does not have heat soak like a regular air/air setup unless you don't have a fan to cool the rad.

Yup, does both.  I also use colder opening thermostate cause I'm down here in the south.  The past few days commuting to get time on the new head gasket water temps have been 80 deg C and oil temps at 100 deg C. EGT's about 400 to 500 on the aircraft spruce gage.  But I am driving it like a grandma steping on a rotten grape tho.   Waiting to romp on it until after I retorque the head. The 4K trans has me turning just over 3500 RPM at 70.

Autocross is low speed and not much airflow over an air to air IC.  My 98 TDI you can't touch the stock pipes after a couple of runs, and can feel the power drop away. I think Corky Bell had some info in his book Maximum Boost on AWIC sizing.
