fuel tank access?
« on: June 14, 2005, 02:55:09 pm »
I want to check the condition of my sending unit. Is there access from under the back seat like some of the other imports, or do I have to drop the tank? I'm getting alot of bubles in the fuel line feeding the IP, today it ran like garbage to boot.

Thanks in advance, you guys are great here!

Which car? Not sure about the '91 but the '99 TDI should have an access panel under the trunk carpet just behind the passenger side rear seat.

there is an access hole.  It might be under the seat and might not be.  I think on the golf it is.  Removal of the rear seat is pretty easy.  It is in with two clips.  Just push back to dislodge the clips and then pull it out.  The access cover is black and round and held in place with phillips screws (which are probably all rusted in place).  The sender unit is screwed into the tank and vw says you need a special tool to remove it but a pair of channel locks properly placed does the job fine.  Make sure you clean all the sand and mud from around the unit before you remove it.  Also check the rubber hose for leaks before you go to the trouble of removing the sender unit.

The tank opening on my '91 Golf is ... if you stand at the back, looking in the hatch area ... on the right side and so far forward you might have to lift the rear seat for easy access.
