Need new Head, Help with options 1.6 or 1.9 possible upgrade
« on: September 04, 2008, 01:28:34 pm »
So, looks like my head is no good after all. to many things wrong and its not worth rebuilding.

What are the reccomended options at this point. It seems as if some people are upgrading to 1.9aaz heads, is this something easy to do?

I can get a "good" used from parts place inc for about 325 shipped w/ a warranty

Or

I can buy from that prothe fellow that has been talked about on other forums. he is selling "new" heads for 265 without any of the extras. should be able to get it built at the machine shop for about $100 so i will have a new head for something like 365-400.

Anyone used this guy for heads? should i upgrade to an aaz. I dont know what to do. I do want to do some sort of upgrade. my stock head casting is scrap, the valves are scrap, the lifters are good, and the cam is ok.

I am just leary of this prothe guy, his prices are great, but i want something that will hold what i am going to do to it.

I appologize for the randomness throught this post. let me summarize my questions.

Used head w/ warranty or new head (from prothe) and built buy local machine shop?
Should i expect quality out of this new head, or a cheap casting?

Should i stay with the 1.6 mechanical or upgrade to a hydraulic or 1.9aaz?

AAZ upgrade, it will drive better and you don't need to stress it so much to get to the same hp

if you want ridiculous HP and torque MTDI is the way to go in order to maintain some reliability.

I have seen MTDI mentioned. But have not searched much to see what it is? can you give me a quick overview?

What is required to modify the head? and what stock parts that i have can be reused? is the head mechanical or hydraulic? is the cam reusable?

Thanks

MTDI is a TDI without the electronics, a hybrid pump is assembled from an old IDI pump and the TDI one (not that simple, the devil is in the details)

you get 20% better consumption for the same power and as the pressure peak is contained inside the piston bowl the head gaskets survive more than the IDI ones, good temperature distribution also helps a lot.

go to the TDI part of the forum, a lot of info there.

You could always get a used AAZ head from me for $150 + shipping. Complete and not warped out of spec

Prothe = chinese parts. We see a lot of the diesel injection pump parts at work and you can clearly see they are not even close to the same quality.

If you have actual proof someone is selling junk you take it up with that person first then report it to Tyler for the feed back thread. If your just going off because you don't like him that's wrong and needs to be taken back channel with that person.

Do you have a actual experience with his heads?
Drop me a PM please we do not need another thread bickering about quality/ origin etc, I don't intend to argue with you either. I'm just curious and don't believe we need to muddy the boards.

I have heard negative and positive. I have heard his parts are less than quality as well. I have bought a few non crucial items from him. so far so good. I am not debating his quality on all of his parts, just the heads. It would seem to me that a head casting would have to be up to par in order to actually work.

Moving on

burn your money, i sent you a pm about your 1.9 head.

What is required to make this head work? maybe another thread or writeup is around. what head gaskets are being run with these? are they the same size valve?

You get what you pay for. Cheap affordable diesel parts are a myth away from Prothe's sites. Not everyone has thousands to spend on a 20 year old VW. I appreciate what Prothe is doing. Sure, there are some things that you can't skip on like injectors or IP's but the rest i see no issue with unless you're making a racing engine in which case i don't think you need to be speezing your pennies in the first place.
