Since its already torn appart... what should i do?
« on: July 28, 2008, 07:54:27 pm »
I'm about to pull the motor from my 1.6na.  Although the compression is around 460psi per cylinder, it's consuming a bit of oil and both crankcase vents (valve cover and block) show quite a bit of blow-by.  It's also got an odd knock around cyl #4.

So the motor is going to be pulled here soon and checked over.  Most likely it will be re-ringed, maybe honed and the head will be pressure checked.

I have no doubts that the rebuild end of this will be done well, but i was wondering if there are any "while i'm in here" kind of things?

I was thinking about porting/polishing the heads, but maybe that's too much of an endevour.  Has anyone put together a how-to on porting a 1.6 diesel head?  Not to say that I haven't searched, but what i've came up with are mostly discussions about how NOT to port the exhaust side.

I was reading about using a gasser flywheel for snappy reving.  Will any flywheel work, or does it need to be a specific one?  If it came from a perfectly working motor, will it still need to be balanced?

Lastly, when it goes back in i had hoped to put a gasser exhaust manifold on with a double downpipe.  I have a '82 1.7 gasser parts car which should have this manifold:

Is that the right one?

Is there anything else quick and dirty that I should do while i'm in there?  I don't mind spending a bit of time doing the extra work and would like to come out with a faster, but still reliable, car.

Any suggestions?[/url]

I'd suggest going ahead and replacing all your shaft seals, oil pan gasket, any of the various coolant soft o-ring seals... basically anything with a "lifespan."

Obviously you'll put a fresh headgasket on it, valve cover gasket.

Good time for fresh nozzles in the injectors, if they haven't been done lately.

Timing belt! :D Easier out of the car than in the car!

On the gasser flywheel question, it should bolt in fine, but you might have to transfer your timing marks over. This was tossed my way when I was considering putting the stock Fox flywheel I had on my 1.5 when it went into the Fox.

Definitly!

Forgot to mention the stuff that i had just considered standard rebuild stuff.  My camshaft seal leaks a little and it could use a new timing belt and gaskets.
