1990 IDI OK in Seattle?
« on: June 30, 2008, 03:53:04 pm »
I may be moving to Seattle Wa.
Can I bring my 1990 VW Jetta Wolfsburg Edition with me or do they not allow old diesels.

Any input would be cool.

Thanks,

Matt

They'll allow you to bring it but it will be required to be tested for emissions when you first get it licensed and every 2 years after that.
This page explains about the testing requirements for WA State.  There is a link on that page to contact them, I'm sure they can point you in the right direction as to what the testing encompasses.

You should have no problem. They will try to put your car on a dyno to perform an opacity test. If you dont want someone that should be working at Burger King operating your car on a dyno, you can ask for a manager and demand a "snap" test. They have you hit full throttle a couple of times and check the particulate emissions.

Oh and if you need parts or work done. I own a VW/Audi shop in Seattle.

Thanks for the reply.

Is it true that if I run 100% bio, my emissions will be almost untraceable?
Also, there is no cat or computer on this vehicle. Will this impede my inspection. The car is a Canadian model with mechanical fuel injection so there is no computer to hook up to (I think).

I have only owned this car for a short time.
I have fallen deeply in love with this thing.

If you are running b100, you should have no problem passing. it should pass on D2 if you havent messed with the pump.

They dont check the computers for emissions until '96. So I wouldnt worry about that.
