1.6 NA Exhaust
« on: June 28, 2008, 08:09:12 am »
Well, i've searched, but all i can find about exhaust is about TD cars, which is a whole 'nother ballgame.  I've got an 85 1.6L NA that i'm wanting to open up the exhaust on to get better mpg.  From my understanding, 2.25" pipe is a good size.  I'm looking at using a Dynomax SuperTurbo muffler, 2.25 diameter inlet/outlet.  Acoording to their website it flows 373 scfm.  My question.  Will this be helpful for mpg, and will it be so raucous that i can't stand it?  Thanks in advance!

I got 2.25" exhaust on the flat maroon rabbit and it does well. I used 2 "cherry bomb" style mufflers, but they were the small ones that I had laying around. The mufflers were off of my old bronco and I believe they were 2.5 or 3 inch pipe size as not to restrict flow. They slid right over the rest of the pipe. The cherry bomb is not known for quietness, but my system in car is quieter than stock and a heck of a lot more flow. I don't know exact numbers but for sure a noticable difference. Just about like everything else I have done with these cars it is a try and see kind of process, but in my opinion it should work for you.

A straight pipe on an n/a is pretty darn loud. I was surprised the first time I heard one. A few miles of that was enough for me!
I have been using gas Golf mufflers for the last couple years.
They are still quite large and heavy.
They are slightly larger than the stock diesel ones. Seems like power and miles per gal. are enhanced.
The mask and the shot(s) are actually an IQ test. If you are wearing or circulating, you just failed the test. I can't feel sorry for you.

haha i drove around with the muffler off of my rabbit for a while it was ridiculously loud, and i had the stock 1.5" or w/e exhaust with the resonator still on.  my old na jetta used to have a 2.25" techtonics exhaust with a dynomax muffler, it was loud too loud for a slow car haha, but not as loud as my muffler less rabbit

I used 1.8 GTI exhaust manifold 4-2-1 on my 1.6 na, and 2 stock VW cans (backbox and the one that fits under the gearshift) in line... The cans however were free flow ones so hopefully there wasn't too much resistance from the buggers.  Sound wise it was very quiet...

I also used a lighter gasser flywheel (1.8 gti i think as well but not sure) and that worked wonders with response...

So a n/a is not too loud w/ just the resonator and one free flowing muffler?
My pipe is about to break and if itīs not too loud, Iīll just put on the muffler I have in the shed, a 2" in/out free flow type...

i have 2inch exhaust into a resonator with a big fart can on my na and its not to loud when u give her its a bit loud but on the high way its quiet it made a big diff in mpg the old one was probly like 35 pounds when we took it out just full of soot. im going to be taking my resonator out soon so i dont know if it would be to loud or if it would make anymore more of a diff?
