Guys,

I can very happily report that i pulled the pan on my 1996 1.9D to reveal under piston cooling jets :D... :twisted:  ... which i figured came complete with TD pistons, wrist pins, con rods etc.... that by the book is supposed to be different to a N/A.

So i thought, if the short motor is a 1.9 TD without the turbo, wonder if the head is also turbo ready. - Lifted the bonnet on my 1996 AAZ and the part number is 028 103 373 J for the cylinder head....  same as my 1.9D 1Y motor, and i know for sure that both motors are stock and havent been changed since factory build.

Talking to a mate who recently pulled the pan on a 1998 Caddy, which didnthave the cooling jets.

For once, a bit of good luck has been thrown my way. Gonna fit the Garrett GT15 instead of the K03 and also front mounted intercooler. What is a safe amount to increase boost to  :twisted: , considering i've got a true TD motor (without TD pump however). I think the stock GT15 runs at 0.7 Bar. Motor has 90,000 miles and was very well looked after, great compression too. New injectors will also be fitted.

Hope this info helps others, but i dont think it gaurantee's all 1Y's are turbo ready. Check the part number above injector 1 and you will be sure.

how do you like those huge balance pads on the big ends of the connecting rods? heeeeavy

Didnt really notice them, i was too busy admiring my cooling jets ! Have to say, i was quite pleased !

I wasnt aware of 'balance pads' ?... this is new to me i must admit, i did think the big end caps looked quite 'butch' but didnt pay much attention, considering its not usually a problem area if assembled correctly with new bolts.

I left the baffle in the sump..anyone care to comment on the baffle, why does the TDi not have a baffle and the indirect injection models do, i've been told its not critical, but i fitted it anyway because i didnt have a TDi sump gasket. Rear sump bolts where a pain as always...

 I presume that because the TDI revs considerably slower at highway speeds, it tends to whip the oil to a lesser degree than the TD. It may or may not be important, difficult to say. If you remove it, and the lifters all collapse at speed due to aerated oil, then I guess it was necessary...  :D

Yeah, and when i wind it out i'll not be left wondering what the baffle was for... priced new sump gasket (which includes the baffle as part of it), costs £50 + Vat, exhaust manifold nuts (those fancy vw type) are almost £1 + vat each !  heat sheilds for the injectors are £2.50 each + Vat (reasonable i thought), converting to US prices will be approx. doubled.
