hey guys,

I have a 1.6TD, but the diff in the gearbox has gone.. anyways my local scrap yard has loads of mk3's.

But..

They're petrol mk3 boxs, they're 020 rod change boxs, so its a straight swap, but if i get a mk3 020 box, are the ratios different as its a diesel?

Also is the speedo hole the same?

Its quite hard to find a mk2 diesel gearbox...

Get the codes and head to www.scirocco.org/gears

I think (but am not positive) that the speedo cable will go in the speed sensing hole. You will need to match it to final drive though, as explained on www.brokevw.com

Careful with the MK3 transmissions. They have a notoriously crap reverse gear. Also, you'll have to change your drive flanges (smaller on the TD), and your clutch disc (larger input shaft with more splines on MK3).

You'd be better off finding a MK 2 gasser trans if you had to go the gasser route.

ASF and ACN code transmissions are a direct bolt in for your car, (minus reverse plug:only one of those is a direct fit for your car), you don't have to worry about blown reverse, and you get the benefits of better MPG. The only downside (which is what you'd get with the MK3 also), is difficulty going into reverse, and slow acceleration in 1st and 2nd.

1st and 2nd aren't too bad with an ASF, it goes OK even with my EcoDiesel. It's not great but, it's not awful. It should be fine in a normal TD.

my best bet sounds a asf/asn.. and if i get better mpg all the better

shame 1st/2nd gear wont be as good.. i feel thats were my td is at its best.. got pull off.. you can't have best of both worlds though.

ACN comes of a 1968 1.6/1.8...

ASF comes of a 1988 golf (although I can link this with etka)//

are all mk3 gearboxs 100m flange???

I could take the gearbox, + flanges, + hubs, + tie rods, + wishbones... :roll: on a 100m flange mk3 box..

Codes are stamped on the bottom. Makes it easy to identify them.

As far as I know, all MK3 have 100mm flanges.

I can confirm this. My B4 tranny died a slow, vocal death due to a reverse gear--and I'm easy on my transmissions. (no grinding going into reverse, carefully executed upshifts/downshifts)

I'd search a bit harder for a Mk2 unit.

i have an asf in mine, just rotate the boost/fuel pin (if you have one) you'll hardly notice the difference in gears. oh and 2900rpm at 60mph is nice too

Slightly off topic, but both my mk2 GTD's use the 4T code gearbox. This is the same one as for most of the 1800cc petrol mk2 Golfs. So not quite so uber rare. Look at the white paper label in the boot floor, the code should be on it, this will save lots of grovelling in wet oily *** at the scrappy. A straight swap fotunately after I suffered the wretched suicidal rivet syndrome. If you have time and inclination, get a bolt kit for the crownwheel. Good luck.

Ah yes. That was a popular syndrome on the 16V transmissions. They like to go on vacation, via the side of the trans case.

Mine is just starting to howl itself to death! Think the diff is on its way out! Its done 154K and i've been turning the fuel and the boost up quite a bit! So I managed to find myself 2 gearboxes! Both genuine GTD ones for £50 each! One has 100K on the other 125K!

sounds like a bargin mate.

my 1Z box has been on for a good 2 months now.

my engine has turned it into mince meat. it makes a growly noise when i put the power down, its impossible to select gears at certain times, and it regualaly gets stuck in 3rd , sumtimes for days :cry:

i wana upgrade to 6 speed. has anyone done this?
i did sum research, seems quite hard but possible

All i'll say is Lupo GTi box! But you need to convert to hydralic clutch & cable change!

you'll need custom drive shafts for a 6spd box
