New to diesel. Thinking about a conversion. Advice needed

Hi everyone.
Im thinking about dropping a 1.9TD aaz into a mk2 Golf. With todays fuel prices it seems worth while and they are more than capable of reasonable power and torque. My problem is I am completely new to diesel tuning. Im pretty handy with petrols but that is where my knowledge stops.

I'd be looking for around 150Bhp with as much torque as possible. What can be done to the AAZ other than upping the boost and fitting a proper FMIC to help achieve this? I understand there are a lot of fuelling modifications but again I dont really understand the terminology.

Any help really appreciated.

Where are you based?

I'm just starting on the same road as you - just in the middle of pulling an AAZ out of a rotten Mk3 glof - looking for a good 2door mk2 gti... and realising just how little I know about diesel pumps...   :?

Im based in essex. That FAQ is very helpful.

As for putting the engine in I understand that the AAZ will drop in on the original mounts using a GTD gearbox, clutch and flywheel.

However:
Do you just connect the fuel lines to the pump/regulator on the diesel engine?

What do you do about radiators/cooling?

Can you use the mk3 exhaust manifold and downpipe mated to a standard mk2 GTI exhaust?

I'll be putting it into a mk2 GTI 8v. Dogday keep me updated with how you get on, very interested to know your progress.

Any other information and advice would be really appreciated.

I put a 1.6TD from a mk2 in a mk3 gas car and kept the mk3 radiator , just cut the hose a bit to make it fit

Not sure what the mk2 gas fuel pump setup is, on mine I disconnected the power, but left it in the tank pump to hold the gas gauge float.  Cut the fuel lines off the pump and extended them to reach the bottom of the tank. I guess I should have put some kind of screen on the end of the line.

under the hood my gas car had the little studs in place to mount the diesel fuel filter which was convenient

Theres a thread somewhere about using the gas fuel pump as a lift pump with some kind of loop to reduce the pressure. I didn't bother, but it looked neat and easy.

Ive been reading the FAQ's and looking through the forum and diesel tuning doesnt half appear complicated. Im hoping it'll be easier with the engine sitting infront of me.
