My engine recipe...tell me if I'm nuts
« on: April 02, 2008, 08:54:53 am »
Ok here is what I have planned for building my engine...

92' 1.6td shortblock (honed and re-ringed)
1.9td cylinder head (rebuilt)
k24 turbo and manifold (port matched)
custom tubular intake manifold
84' 1.6td IP (possibly going to GILES for a re-build)
2.5" downpipe and full 2.5" exhaust
1.9td headgasket

I am loking for good power and reliability, do you guys think this would be a good combination, if not what would you change.

I have the IP and shortblock already, working on getting the rest ordered.

Looking at having around $1800-$2000 max in the motor, to go into a $200 two door body :D
I'll try being nicer, if you try being smarter...

Check your piston to wall clearance or ring end gap with a new ring, most blocks I've seen come through my shop need bored because they are so worn, and the rering thing works ok for about 10-20k miles, but they start blowing smoke again shortly thereafter

I was planning on measuring everything and going form there, the shortblock is supposed to be a relatively low mileage engine,i am going to put a head gasket and head on it and do a compression test to evaluate it, i know it wont be a perfect test, but it will give me a decent idea of where I am starting.

oddly, it applies to lots of people I deal with everyday, sad really.

Mike, I have seen that you deal in parts for these things, can you send me a list of prices.

I would be looking for oversized pistons and rings, new valves (td).

Heres my list,

http://www.thedubdoctor.com/parts_site/idiparts.html

brands I carry are all the best quality available, mostly of German origin... you need to decide what head gasket you want. Especially pay attention to the main bearings, the integrated collar type are trouble. Don't even think about not doing intermediate shaft bearings, they are a big source of low / no oil pressure.

also, If you do pistons you need the piston pin bushings.

if you could get your hands on a T3 turbo i would go that route, if not the K24 will do.  more oomph in the upper rpm range

thats about what i'm going to do, you should get some good power out of this setup, i hope to, the only thing i would change would be to add an intercooler if ur not already.

I am planning on a FMIC, I've heard the packaging can be hard on a MK1, but with the custom front bumper I have planned I will be able to fit one in.  I am hoping for 100hp and 150 ft lbs.  That is somewhere around the output of my 06 TDI Jetta, in a car that weighs a lot less.
I was planning on a 1.9 AAZ head gasket, but I also found a place that will cut a solid copper sheet gasket, I will also be using ARP main and head studs.

So Myke_w....

What should be the ring end gap with new rings on a 1.6TD and a 1.9TD??

you could squeeze 150hp out of that no prob.  don't forget a larger downpipe to keep your egt's down.

whaaaattt??  really?? Are you talking about my engine or the dezel's engine??  i'll be wayy too happy with thatt!!

but are you sure i'll get that kinda bhp?

Note that all components are stock including the IP....i am also adding a 3" turbo back straight exhaust. and will prolly add an intercooler later!

Do you know whcih Turbo the MF engine has?
