Volks,

I hate to bring this up, but I am a newbie. I would like the list opinion on suitable replacement timing belt and tensioner.

Who are reliable, quality manufacturers, and where is a good place to buy on the web. I am in eastern US. I am an aircooled guy, just getting into water cooled out of necessity. I default to german parts, but will purchase suitable replacements parts if highly recommended.

I don't want to start a debate, just get my 1990 Jetta on the road with the right replacement parts ASAP. Gas is getting too expensive and I drive 120 Miles/day.

Also, what type of gear oil do I use in the transmission. 90W GR5? My axle seals are leaking a bit. Can I just pop off the half shafts and replace? Anything I need to be aware of?

Obviously, still shopping for a Bentley manual.
Looking for an exhaust pipe from manifold back. Any decent suppliers?

I think I can help you out with that, I have a deluxe TB kit:

Continental timing belt 068 109 119E
SKF Tenstioner 068 109 243F
Elring camshaft seal 068 109 243
10x740 and 10x695 Continental belts--you might be 10x700 on the 2nd one, need to know last 6 of Vin.
Bosch or Geba water pump 037 121 005C
Upgraded water pump gasket 026 121 041M
Total: $89

Bentley Manual --- $45
Bosal stainless steel exhaust kit Cat Back (112708) with resonator, muffler, and all pipes. Probably more than what you're looking for, but what I have available --- $495

All the tensioners I've bought have been SKF brand, both gas and diesel VWs.

Conti for the belts seems to be the consensus.

For all your tranny inquiries www.brokevw.com should have the answers. You do need a tool to compress the flanges, as they are spring loaded

You might want to consider upgrading to the ABA (2.0 gas) valve cover. It's rubber and re-usable. You will need the proper non-shouldered studs (or bolts if you prefer)

You need special timing tools for the timing procedure. Look in the FAQs for a post by Vince Waldon, he has a very nice writeup on pump timing on his page

I'll take that as a vote of confidence :) If anyone has anything to add that I should have in my kit I'm all ears--I specialize in the TDIs, have only supplied a few kits for the older diesels, but no complaints yet!

IMO the water pump is not necessary if they don't have AC because it is very easy to change with the pump in place. Great prices though

Maybe  you should sell a complete straight through exhaust kit too. Lots of us are running with no muffler or resonator on turbo cars...........

Cheaper that way (not too loud and more power to boot)

Sell ot with the toilet bowl downpipe OR the mk3 front pipe.

Does this car have two timing belts?
Do I need the Cam seal?
Should I be replacing the water pump at the same time?

Does this car have two timing belts? No, I beleive the ones listed are V belts (optional)
Do I need the Cam seal? No, I've only ever done one
Should I be replacing the water pump at the same time? depends. If you want to take it out later without taking the AC and shizz off you need to remove the timing belt but it can be gotten at by taking everything else off ontop of of it (alt, PS, AC)

Re: Water pump--my recommendation is that if you have 180,000 miles or more (3rd TB change) you replace the water pump. They tend to not last much past 200,000 miles. I can do the kit without the cam seal for $85, and without the water pump kit for $55. Shipping regardless of what you do will be $10.

I use GM Synchromesh in my tranny and it works great. Another popular gear oil is MTL Redline.
