I just figured out my mpg's with the new diesel (new to me, trying to save fuel cost vs. my turbo gasser mk2) and it got 32 mpg. I don't think thats too great seeing as my gasser got 29 before i added the turbo.

i've cut away the air box to get more air flow, turned up the IP a little bit to get a bit more power, running 0w40 synthetic rotella, and it idles a little high.. maybe 1000rpm.

other then the idling, i cant see why fuel mileage would be decreased unless the fuel filter is old.

whats "normal" for a N/A?

that's what i got before any tune up , synthetic oil, etc.
on the highway i get almost or just 700 km's to a tank. I think it's a 70 l tank, right?
so 10 km's /l
oh wait, that would 45 mpg. oh well that actually sounds a little high. could be why i only have to fill it every 2 or 3 weeks in town though. In town i get about 500 km's per tank 1/2 city 1/2 highway driven hard.

I was greatly disappointed if I hit less then 800kms/tank on my 92 1.6 TD. NAs should get mid 40s easy. what's your timing at, condition of injectors, what tranny are you using, what are your shift points, do you have any smoke, how;'s the air filter etc ect

yeah you should be getting at least 40-45 mpg.
BTW that wasn't 45 mpg i'm getting, it's actually about 30mpg

i've gotten that bad before... depends how you drive. although my td never seemed to changed whether i drove really fast or really slow

My 91 1.6 NA Golf gets about 800 km per tank. My 86 1.5 NA Golf got 1000 km per tank. Gearing is different on the 91, so it accelerates noticeably better, but loosing 200 km/tank is hard to take. I haven't calculated actual mileage on the 91, but my best on the 86 was 56 mpg (Imperial).

I had to squeeze my NA 91 Golf to get 1000km per tank. Once I even sputtered into the filling station just over 1000km of all hwy driving. That is really quite good and you seen my Golf. It was looked/sounded like a heap of crap. Also, the mileage dropped significantly when I put the new trans in. Geared much different and revved faster on the highway.

Does your engine reach operating temps? I have to put a piece of cardboard behind my grill to allow it to warm up. Did you check the compression? Is it slower than it should be? Also, check the return line to the tank, they can leak. You would notice a leak in the injector lines so that couldn't be it.

Compression test will tell you a lot. Could be your rings. Do the tests that I mention and if you find nothing, then its probably internal. In the worst case otherwise, it would be your injectors. Ive heard horror stories of V8 fuel economy with VW diesels and it was rectified with rebuilt injectors.

I have the window sticker from my 86 Golf NA Diesel, it states........
37 MPG City and 44 Highway for 97 CID 4 cyl Diesel with 5 speed trans. An estimated annual fuel cost of $450.

I got a little less in mileage stated on the sticker but the car had 240,000 miles on it. Now it has a turbo motor and I get about 33-37 around town. And maybe 38-39 highway. But I drive with a heavy foot and like to keep the turbo boost up.

32.2 mpg?

Sounds a little low. My 80 Dasher diesel wagon got 33.6mpg on a 3600-mile trip, pulling a trailer(2400 lbs., total weight 4660lbs).

i just got 41.9mpg in mine, and thats the lowest that ive ever recorded for my NA... usually i get about 44mpg, but its gotten 48mpg before...

well its a 55L tank to start. and the air filter is new, using 0w40 synth. oil. not sure what it revs at on the highway (tach doesnt work) but im not sure how new the fuel filter is. I drive about 130km/h on the highway. i've turned up the IP a LITTLE bit to get a but more power, smokes a bit but not much, maybe i'll turn that and idle down.

BTW, the last fill up i put in 54.5L (remember its a 55L tank) and got 667.1 kms to that tank

find your tranny code and go to www.scirocco.org/gears and you will figure out what your RPM is at 130. That's probably why your mileage is so poor

no wonder.

if i had an AUG (as crappy as they are) it would be 3863RPM, but that would be even worse acceleration.

BTW, i just ordered a new fuel filter

I think AWY is for the eco diesel only but I could be wrong.
