« on: January 21, 2008, 11:10:23 am »
My 91 ecodiesel was in the shop for timing belt and water pump. Now I got a call from my mechanic saying that  I need a new water pump pulley, but its like $215 just for the part. Is there any ware I can find 1 on the web?

The bearings inside the pulley are shot.

That doesn't sound right... there are no bearings in the pulley itself. There's a bearing in the water pump casing, the front part that gets replaced with the pump, but nothing on the pulley... It's just a pulley.

Sounds like he needs a waterpump, I supose there is a small chance it was bad enough that the actual pulley was rubbing on something causing it needing to be replaced as well..??

If its like my jetta with p/s the water pump pulley has got bearings inside it,one part of it freewheels, the alternator belt does not spin the pump, the pump is driven by the p/s belt.

Gasser pulleys with the clutched pulley should work just the same. You might have to change the belt sizes though.

On the clutched pulleys, there are no beagings: just a fiber sleeve. So, you might be able to free up your old one.

Here's the part number for the correct ECOdiesel pulley:
068121028

You can get it for a lot less at www.1stvwparts.com (about $160)

Call before you order. Some of these old parts are getting hard to find.

Stuff like this is why I love my Fox... no power steering, light weight, good handling... but I really wish they gave me a bit more room up front for belt access!
